In Uttar Pradesh, the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Rajya Sabha has expressed displeasure over low oxygen content and pollution in the rivers of the state including Ganga, Yamuna and Gomti.
The committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests comprising five members was in the state capital to review the pollution level of Gomti. The members included chairman of the committee, T Subbarami Reddy, Prof Ranjan Prasad Yadav, Rabinarayan Mohapatra, Alok Tewari and Pradeep Tamta.
The committee discussed the existing problems regarding availability of water with the chief secretary Javed Usmani and other senior officers. Senior BJP leader and MP from Lucknow, Lalji Tandon was also present in the meeting.

West Bengal celebrates the 116th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose today. The main function was held at Netaji Bhavan in Kolkata, where State Governor Mr. M. K. Narayanan and Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee paid floral tributes at the portrait of Netaji.
Speaking on the occasion Ms. Banerjee announced that the state Government will construct a Monument at Subhasgram in the name of Netaji and will preserve his native house at Kodalia in South 24 Pargana District as a heritage building.
Our Kolkata correspondent reports that, large number of people are visiting Netaji Bhavan in South Kolkata since morning to pay their homage to the great hero of the freedom movement.
Punjab swine flu: Eight more cases test positive in Ludhiana |

In Punjab, eight more suspected cases of swine flu have been tested positive in Ludhiana.
Nodal Officer, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, Dr Deepak Bhatia said that six patients are under treatment in Ludhiana and one each in Ropar and Mohali. So far 43 swine flu cases have been confirmed .
Multi-media campaign to provide info to people in MP districts on Cash Transfer |

In Madhya Pradesh, over a dozen units of Directorate of Field Publicity-DFP have launched a 15 day awareness campaign on Direct Cash Transfer Scheme in Khandwa, Harda and Hoshangabad districts.
This central scheme is being implemented in these districts from this month. DFP units are using different media to provide information about the Direct Cash Transfer Scheme to the rural people.
Poll conduct violation: FIR against three BSP MPs & candidate for UP by-poll

An FIR has been registered against three BSP MPs and its candidate for Bhatpar Rani by-elections for allegedly violating the model code of conduct, officials said in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh today.
Returning Officer R D Pandey said. the FIR was registered at Khampur police station yesterday after the matter came to light,The by-election to the seat was necessitated after the death of Sports Minister Kameshwar Upadhyay on Oct 29. |
N.India cold wave:near arctic conditions in parts of HP; two more dead in UP |

The cold wave continued to hamper normal life in most parts of North India.
In Kashmir Valley,normal life has been disrupted following severe cold wave . The minimum temperatures plummeted several degrees below freezing point.
Most water bodies across the Valley, including the famous Dal Lake, were partially frozen due to the drop in temperature.
Biting cold wave conditions remained unabated in Himachal Pradesh as the temperature in some parts of the state dipped below minus 20 degree Celsius.
The high altitude tribal areas, covered under 150 to 180 cm thick blanked of snow, shivered under arctic conditions with minimum temperatures staying between minus 18 and minus 28 deg C, paralysing normal life.
Punjab and Haryana also suffered due to the harsh weather with night temperatures remaining up to three degrees Celsius below normal.
Cold wave continued to mar normal life in Uttar Pradesh as two persons lost their lives in Barabanki district. The death toll in UP due to the harsh weather touched 267 this season.
Residents of the national capital had a taste of harsh winter with the minimum temperature plummeting below normal yesterday.
R-Day Parade rehearsal: Traffic Police issues advisory; Some Metro stations shut till noon

Delhi Traffic Police has made diversions to certain routes in view of the full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day Parade-2013 in the national capital.
The parade will start at 09:50 this morning from Vijay Chowk and proceed to Red Fort ground. Delhi Police in its traffic advisory has said that traffic will not be allowed from Vijay Chowk to India Gate on Rajpath from 5 o'clock in the morning to 12:30 afternoon. Road users have been requested to plan their journey in advance and avoid the route during the parade .
Metro Rail Services at Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan Metro Stations will not be available till 12:30 P.M. |
Vaghela new Gujarat Cong Legislature Party leader

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela was tonight appointed Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, CLP in the state. The appointment was made by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi who was authorized by a meeting of the Gujarat Congress Legislature Party in Gandhinagar earlier in the day to select the leader.
Vaghela, 72, succeeds Shaktisinh Gohil who was the CLP leader in the last Assembly but who failed to win the recent assembly poll in the state. The announcement about the appointment of Vaghela as CLP leader was made by Congress General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi in New Delhi.
In Gandhinagar, the Gujarat CLP meeting passed a resolution leaving it to Sonia Gandhi to decide about the new CLP leader. The CLP meeting was held in the presence of central party observers-- Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and party's state in-charge Mohan Prakash.
