Nation celebrates Milad-un-Nabi with religious fervor & traditional gaiety
Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad, is being celebrated across the country today with religious fervor and traditional gaiety. Thousands of Muslims thronged to pray in Dargahs and mosques.
The President, Vice President, the Prime Minister and the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi have greeted the nation on the occasion.In his message, the President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said prophet's message of brotherhood, compassion, tolerance and service to humanity, guide and inspire the people to live a righteous and productive life. The Vice President said the message of the Prophet guide the people in building a peaceful and harmonious society.
The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in his message,recalled the timeless and eternal teachings of the Prophet, which speak of brotherhood, tolerance and compassion among fellow human beings. Mrs. Sonia Gandhi said, the Prophet had a deep love for the entire humanity and we should pledge to preserve his ideals for a better tomorrow.
In Tamilnadu, special prayers for world peace and communal harmony were held held at mosques in Tirunelveli.

The National Voters' Day is being observed today across the country. The objective of the day is to increase citizen's participation in the electoral process, more specifically to enroll the newly eligible youth who have just attained the age of 18 years, in the electoral rolls.
According to data released by the Election Commission, over 2.32 crore citizens have been registered under the enrollment drive conducted by the Commission across the country ahead of the 3rd National Voters' Day. Of them, around 93 lakh voters are in the age group of 18 to 19 years.
Director General, Election Commission Akshay Rout said on this day the newly enrolled voters will be given Electoral Photo Identity Card at functions across the country. He said school and colleges, news agencies, All India Radio and Doordarshan, Indan Railways and Rural Development Ministry have been carrying out awareness campaign about the voting Rights of individuals.

Ansari calls upon citizens to value vote & importance of exercising right to vote | ||
Vice President Md.Hamid Ansari today called upon the citizens to value their vote and the importance of exercising their right to vote in electoral process. Addressing a function on the occasion of the 3rd national Voters Day in New Delhi , Mr Ansari said that it is the time to examine the causes of not exercising the right to vote by each of the citizens. Lauding the Election Commission's efforts, the Vice President said that high standards set by the Commission are now globally recognised and it is sharing its resources on election management with other countries also. Noting that electoral system in the country encourages candidates to focus on securing votes of a segment of the electorate, he said that such practice promotes divisive tendencies and social conflicts which needs to be addressed. Mr Ansari also gave away the National Awards for the best Electotal practices, media awards for the best campaign on voter eduction and awareness. On this day the Vice President also handed over voter identity cards to the 10 voters of Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, Law Minister Mr Ashwani Kumar said that government is considering for bringing a set of proposals related to electoral reforms. He said, it will ensure that candidtes with clean and fair image will be able to take part in the electoral process. Chief Election Commissioner, V.S Sampath on this occasion, informed about the measures being taken by the eleaction commisions to increase participations of voters during elections. Bhutan King to be chief guest at Republic Day parade The King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck will be the chief guest at this year's Republic Day parade. He was given a ceremonial reception by the President Pranab Mukherjee at the forecourts of Rashtrapati Bhawan this morning. Accompanied by Queen Jetsun Pema, the Bhutan King is on a 8 day State visit to India. He also paid floral tributes at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Later today the Bhutan King will call on the President and meet Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. During his visit, he will also hold talks with Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj. AIR correspondent says, the King's visit will contribute to further strengthening and expanding the close bilateral relations between India and Bhutan. The unique and special relations between the two neighbouring countries are characterized by everlasting friendship, deep understanding and mutual trust. |
