All 5 accused in Mumbai rape case are adults, says Mumbai Police Commissioner

Setting aside claims of family members of two accused of being juvenile, Mumbai police Comissioner Satyapal Singh today said that all the five accused in the Mumbai photo- journalist rape case, are adults and proper chargesheet against all the accused will be filed accordingly.

Addressing the media in Mumbai, Mr. Singh said, police has collected evidences and will file a chargesheet at the earliest. He said, the case will be heard in a fast track court and police will ensure that maximum punishment is meted out to all the accused.

Sharing details about the accused, Mr. Singh said, all the five are from Mumbai with three of them having past criminal records.

For prevention of similar incidents in future, Mr. Singh said that the police have made a list of isolated places in the city and proper steps would be taken to avert such type of cases in the future.

Earlier, the fifth accused Mohd. Salim Ansari arrested on Sunday from Delhi, was sent to police custody till September 5.
VHP activists clash with police in New Delhi while protesting the ban on Ayodhya yatra

Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists today clashed with the police at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi during a protest against the UP Government's decision to ban their Ayodhya yatra, prompting police to use water canons to disperse them.

According to a Senior Police Official, the protestors pelted stones at police during the demonstration and tried to break barricades. Police had to resort to use of water canons and mild canon charge to disperse the protestors.

The protestors also burnt an effigy of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. The UP government had banned the VHP yatra over fears of communal flare up.

Top VHP leaders Pravin Togadia and Ashok Singhal were among around 1,700 people arrested in a massive crackdown by the UP administration on Sunday.
3 suspended TDP MPs on indefinite dharna in Parliament House complex on Telangana issue

Three suspended Telugu Desam Party MPs are on an indefinite dharna in Parliament House complex in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue.

They are demanding setting up of a Committee on Telangana issue of all parties and also stakeholders of three regions of Andhra Pradesh. They said that they have no confidence in any Committee constituted by the Government or the Congress party.

The suspended Congress MPs also visited dharna site to express solidarity with the TDP MPs.

AIR Correspondent reports that 12 MPs from Andhra Pradesh comprising eight from Congress and four from TDP were suspended from Lok Sabha by the Speaker for five consecutive sittings of the House for disrupting proceedings.
Rajya Sabha passes Marriage Laws(Amendment)Bill 2010

The Rajya Sabha has passed the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2010 after negating the Opposition amendments by voice vote.

Under the new law, a provision has been made to restrict the grant of decree of divorce on the ground of irretrievable breakdown of marriage if the court is satisfied that adequate provision for the maintenance of children born out of the marriage, has not been made consistently with the financial capacities of the parents.

Initiating the discussion, Dr Najma Heptullah of the BJP has asked the government to bring a uniform law applicable to women of all sections.

She alleged that the government has not done anything for the welfare of muslim women. Responding to this, Renuka Choudhary of the Congress said that her party always stood for women of all sections.

Her party colleague Dr. Ram Prakash said, divorces can be minimized if the daughters and daughters-in-law are treated at par in the society.
SC terms as premature petition filed against creation of Telangana

The Supreme Court today termed as premature, a petition filed against the proposed creation of the new state of Telangana by bifurcating Andhra Pradesh, which is yet to get Parliament's nod.

A Bench comprising Justices H L Dattu and S J Mukhopadhaya said, the Central government will take the matter to Parliament which will accept or reject the proposal.

Declining to entertain the PIL filed by advocate P V Krishnaiah, the Bench said, a few more required steps have not been taken as yet and the petition is premature.

The PIL had said, the proposal for the creation of Telangana was political as its demand has been rejected twice in the past. Further, it said, the decision has also resulted in a hostile environment in the state.
Panel suggests EC should make Code of Conduct applicable to political parties from date of notification of elections

A Parliamentary Panel today suggested that the Election Commission should make the Code of Conduct applicable to the political parties from the date of notification of elections. The current practice is to make the Code of Conduct applicable from the date of notification of polling schedule by the Election Commission.

Briefing the media after presenting the 61st Report of the Committee on Anti-Defection Law and Model Code of Conduct, MCC, in Parliament, Committee Chairman Shantaram Naik said, elections are held in multiple phases where the enforcement period of MCC invariably exceeds the six week period which paralyzes developmental works in the country.

Expressing concern over the disposal of election petitions, the Committee recommended the setting up of Fast Track Courts to dispose of election petitions within a year.
Full bench of EC on 2-day visit to Bhopal to review preparations of Legislative Assembly elections

The full bench of the Election Commission of India arrived in Bhopal this afternoon on a two day tour to review preparations for the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections in the state.

Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampat, Election Commissioners H.S. Brahma and Dr. Naseem Zaidi met representatives of national political parties at Bhopal this evening.

They will have discussions with senior administrative officers, divisional commissioners, collectors, SPs and other senior police officers on Tuesday. Legislative Assembly elections are due in the state this year.

Punjab NRI Commission takes notice of news of 500 Punjabis murdered in Philippines

Punjab NRI commission has taken a suo moto notice of news item wherein there has been an indication that as per an estimate, nearly 500 Punjabis have been murdered in 2012 in Philippines by way of contract killings. The victims were financers.

Quoting Commission’s order in which it has listed this case for September 5th, AIR Jalandhar Correspondent reports that the Commission has asked the state to act fast and constitute a three member committee.

It should consist of a Senior IPS Officer as member. The committee will monitor the cause of such murders and would extend all possible support of every kind including legal.

If need be, committee must visit Philippines to have an interaction with the Punjabi Community, Indian Embassy and Govt. authorities to redress their grievances.

The Commission has asked Punjab to also coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs & Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs for the welfare and safety of Punjabi NRIs. Both the Ministeries have also been informed.
R Dharmesena of Congress wins by-election to Karnataka Legislative Council

The Congress candidate from the Mysore-Chamrajnagar local Authority constituency R Dharmesena has won by-election to the Karnataka Legislative Council. He defeated KJP candidate U S Shekar. BJP and JD(S) had not fielded their candidates from here and had supported the KJP candidate. The by election was necessitated following the resignation of BJP MLC Mallikarjunappa, who joined KJP headed by former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.

In Chitradurga-Davangere local authority constituency, an Independent Raghu Achar has won defeating the BJP candidate K S Navin. The results of Hubli-Dharwad constituency is awaited, where counting of votes were stopped due to error in the counting of third preferential votes.
Flood situation continues to be grim in UP

In Uttar Pradesh, the flood situation continues to be grim as all the major rivers including Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghra, Ramganga, Ken and Betwa are in spate. Hundreds of villages in many districts of Bundelkhand have also been flooded since last three days. The administration has alerted people residing in low catchment areas to speedily vacate the flood-affected places. At present more than six lakh population of the state spread over 32 Tehsils, is reeling under the floods.

AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that river Ganga, swollen alarmingly due to surge in Yamuna, has drowned vast areas in Allahabad city, low lying areas of Varanasi and hundreds of villages in Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Ghazipur and Ballia. Meanwhile flood water has receded in some areas of Terai region which is under the siege of inundation since last two months. But the administration is yet to gear up to cope with diarrhea and other contagious diseases which has begun to spread in Balrampur, Barabanki, Shrawasti and Bahraich.

Over Ten crore rupees given to 14,054 beneficiaries under Ladli Scheme in Haryana

In Haryana, a sum of over 10.52 crore rupees has been given during the current financial year to 14,054 beneficiaries so far, under the Ladli Scheme aimed at balancing the sex ratio in the state.

Stating this at Chandigarh today, Women and Child Development Minister, Mrs. Geeta Bhukkal said that Ladli scheme is being implemented in Haryana since the year 2005-06 to arrest declining sex ratio and to create positive bias in favour of the second daughter in the family.

Under this scheme, a grant of 5000 rupees per year, per family is given for five years on the birth of the second daughter in a family. The government is investing this amount in insurance scheme of LIC.

The amount of about one lakh rupees at current rates of interest is paid through LIC after the second daughter attains the age of 18 years.

The Minister said that grant of about 69.82 crore rupees had been released to 32,832 beneficiaries during the last financial year under the scheme.

Both the Houses of Parliament witnessed repeated adjournments today on the Vishwa Hindu Parishad yatra in Uttar Pradesh. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned till 2 PM on the same issue. Earlier, the two Houses were adjourned twice in the pre-lunch session.
As soon as the Lok Sabha met for the day, BJP members protested against the ban on Chourasi Kosi Parikrama and the arrest of its leaders. Samajwadi Party members trooped into the well of the House countering the slogans raised by the BJP. When the Lok Sabha reassembled at noon, Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav accused the BJP of not following the court’s directives. He said by banning the Parikrama, the Uttar Pradesh government has only followed the directives of the Supreme Court. He charged the BJP with ransacking the Samajwadi Party office in New Delhi. Yogi Adityanath of the BJP accused the state government for undermining the people’s right to religion. Demanding the sacking of the Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh, he alleged that the state government is releasing the persons arrested for their involvement in terror activities and appeasing the minority community. The BJP member also alleged that the state is providing government land for grave yards and infringing upon the rights and benefits of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath today said that he has discussed with some political parties concerns on the VHP Yatra in Uttar Pradesh. Talking to reporters outside Parliament House, he said that any body can raise issue for discussion but the practice of disrupting the proceedings is unfortunate.
Gurudas Dasgupta of the CPI alleged the BJP is using the Ram Mandir and Parikrama issues to consolidate its vote bank in Uttar Pradesh. He told reporters that God is to be worshipped and should not be made a pawn at the hands of politicians.

Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has said that the Maharashtra government is trying its best to complete the investigation into the Mumbai gang rape incident expeditiously. Making a statement in the Lok Sabha today, he said that the state government will prosecute the accused under the law.
I spoke to the Maharashtra Home Minister this morning that the case should be fast tracked as soon as possible. They have decided to take it to the Fast track court and have also decided to appoint a Special advocate in the case. I have full faith in the Home Minister of Maharashtra. The case will be decided soon.
Mr Shinde said, the statement of the male companion of the victim has been recorded and medical and forensic examinations have been carried out. Spot visit and collection of evidence from the spot have also been conducted. Not satisfied with the Home Minister’s statement, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj asked the government to hand out capital punishment to the rapists.
The Parliament passed a stringent law against rape and said that speedy justice should be delivered in such cases. But I am disappointed that no judgment has been given in Damini case yet. Such incidents are occurring only because we have not been able to roll out speedy punishment to these culprits . Therefore, I request that the word expeditiously should not just be used but should also be followed.

The government has set up a Tax Administration Reform Commission to review the application of tax policies and tax laws in the country. The Commission under Parthasarathy Shome will submit periodic reports that can be implemented to strengthen the capacity of the country's tax system.
The Commission with a term of 18 months will review the existing mechanism and business processes of tax governance and recommend appropriate measures.
It will also suggest measures for deepening and widening of the tax base and enforce better tax compliance.
The Commission will also will look into enhancing predictive analysis to detect and prevent tax and economic offences.

A Mumbai court today remanded the fifth accused in the photo journalist’s gangrape case to police custody till September 5.
A team of the Mumbai crime branch arrested the fifth and the final accused Mohammed Salim Ansari yesterday in North West Delhi's Ashok Vihar. He was produced before a court in Rohini to seek his transit remand for being transported to Mumbai. He was produced in the Mumbai court today.

The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to file its response on a PIL seeking initiation of removal process of former Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan from the post of NHRC Chairman for his alleged misbehavior and purchase of benami properties. A bench headed by Justice BS Chauhan asked the Centre to file its response within three weeks. During the brief hearing, the bench said let the Ministry of Law and Justice apprise the court about the status of the earlier complaint filed on this issue.

The Supreme Court also dismissed a plea for initiating contempt proceedings against the UP government and its Chief Minister for suspending IAS officer Durga Sakthi Nagpal. Nagpal had cracked down on the sand mafia in Gautam Budh Nagar.

A Delhi court today fixed October 28 for hearing the additional spectrum case in which Bharti Cellular CMD Sunil Mittal, Essar Group promoter Ravi Ruia and others have been summoned as an accused. Special CBI Judge OP Saini adjourned today's proceedings in the case as Mittal and Ruia had filed separate pleas, saying the Supreme Court had said that there was no need for clarification on its interim order of April the 26th.

Speaking at a conference on innovation in urban governance in New Delhi today, Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath said, disbursal of density in urban areas can happen if there is long term strategic planning for sub-urbanization which he said, involves skills and knowledge. More than 10 thousand people have been evacuated in Narmada, Bharuch and Vadodara districts of south Gujarat due to flood in Narmada River. People in more than 50 villages in low lying areas of Narmada, Bharuch and Vadodara districts have been put on high alert. More from our correspondent:
Bharuch and Narmada districts are the worst affected by the flood water following over flowing of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam due to heavy rain in Madhya Pradesh. Paring most of its initial gains, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange stood 18 points, or 0.1 percent in positive territory, at 18,538 in afternoon trade, a short while ago. Earlier in the morning, the Sensex had opened with a bigger gain of 144 points, or 0.8 percent, at 18,663, on expectations that the government will take steps to attract capital flows to fund the current account deficit, and on firm regional bourses. The Sensex had climbed over 610 points in the previous two trading sessions. Stock markets in China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea were up by between 0.1 percent and 1.9 percent, today.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee weakened sharply by 100 paise, to 64.20 per dollar in late morning trade, today, on good demand for the US currency from banks and importers, amid a rise in crude oil prices. The rupee had closed at 63.20 against the dollar, last Friday. In the global market, the US dollar swung between small gains and losses against major currencies, after US Federal Reserve, or central bank officials wrapped up a yearly gathering, appearing ready to start slowing monetary stimulus next month.

Sri Lanka’s Navy took into custody 35 fishermen in four fishing trawlers from Tamil Nadu late last night. Speaking to All India Radio, Sri Lankan Navy Spokesman Commander Kosala said that the arrest was made near the coast of Kalpitiya town, which is on the west coast, 150 kilometers north of Colombo. The fishermen are being taken to Kalpitiya and will be handed over to the local police for further legal action against trespassing into Sri Lankan territory and poaching, he added.
Officials of the Indian High Commission said that all efforts will be made to secure an early release of these fishermen when they will be produced before the Magistrate’s court by the police.

संसद के दोनों सदनों में आज उत्तर प्रदेश में विश्व हिन्दू परिषद की यात्रा के मुद्दे को लेकर शोरशराबा हुआ और कार्यवाही में बाधा आई। दोनों सदन भोजनावकाश से पहले दो बार स्थगित होने के बाद दिन में दो बजे तक कर दिए गए। लोकसभा में आज जैसे ही बैठक शुरू हुई, भाजपा के सदस्य चौरासी कोसी परिक्रमा पर रोक लगाने और अपने नेताओं की गिरफ्तारी पर विरोध प्रकट करने लगे। समाजवादी पार्टी के सदस्य भाजपा के नारों का विरोध करते हुए सदन के बीचोबीच आ गए। सदन की कार्यवाही बारह बजे तक स्थगित कर दी गयी। बारह बजे बैठक फिर शुरू होने पर समाजवादी पार्टी के अध्यक्ष मुलायम सिंह यादव ने भाजपा पर अदालत के निर्देशों का पालन न करने का आरोप लगाया।

ये न्यायपालिका को मानते नहीं, संविधान को मानते नही। क्या चाहते है? मैं ये पूछना चाहता हूं। सुप्रीम कोर्ट में फैसला हुआ, सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने कहा कि सरकार को यथास्थिति बनाये रखने की आवश्यकता है, उनको बनाये रखना पड़ेगा। तो आज हम सुप्रीम कोर्ट के फैसले को मान रहे है। 

भाजपा के योगी आदित्यनाथ ने उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार पर लोगों के धर्म के अधिकार का हनन करने का आरोप लगाया। राज्य में समाजवादी पार्टी की सरकार को बर्खास्त करने की मांग करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि राज्य सरकार आतंकवादी गतिविधियों में शामिल होने के आरोप में गिरफ्तार लोगों को रिहा कर रही है और अल्पसंख्यक समुदाय को खुश कर रही है। भाजपा के सदस्यों ने यह आरोप भी लगाया कि राज्य सरकार कब्रिस्तानों के लिए सरकारी जमीन दे रही है और अनुसूचित जातियों और अनुसूचित जनजातियों के अधिकारों और उन्हें दिए जा रहे लाभों में कटौती कर रही है।

संसदीय मामलों के मंत्री कमलनाथ ने कहा है कि उन्होंने उत्तर प्रदेश में विश्व हिन्दू परिषद की यात्रा को लेकर कुछ राजनीतिक दलों की चिन्ताओं के बारे में विचार-विमर्श किया था। संसद भवन के बाहर संवाददाताओं से बातचीत में उन्होंने कहा कि संसद में कोई भी, चर्चा के लिए मुद्दा उठा सकता है, लेकिन सदन की कार्यवाही में बाधा डालना दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है।

भारतीय कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के गुरूदास दासगुप्त ने आरोप लगाया है कि भारतीय जनता पार्टी, उत्तर प्रदेश में अपना वोट बैंक मजबूत करने के लिए राम मंदिर और परिक्रमा के मुद्दों का इस्तेमाल कर रही है।

गृह मंत्री सुशील कुमार शिंदे ने कहा है कि महाराष्ट्र सरकार मुम्बई सामूहिक दुष्कर्म घटना की जल्द से जल्द जांच पूरी करने के लिए पूरी कोशिश कर रही है। आज लोकसभा में एक वक्तव्य में उन्होंने कहा कि राज्य सरकार कानून के तहत आरोपियों पर मुकदमा चलाएगी।

मैं आज सुबह महाराष्ट्र के गृहमंत्री से बात किया कि इसमें फास्ट ट्रैक और जल्द से जल्द करना चाहिए। उन्होंने फास्ट ट्रैक कोर्ट में ले जाने का तय किया है। स्पेशल एडवोकेट उसके लिए एप्योंमेंट करने का भी तय किया है।

श्री शिंदे ने कहा कि पीड़िता के साथ गए, उसके पुरूष सहयोगी का बयान दर्ज कर लिया गया है तथा मेडिकल और फोरेंसिक जांच की गयी है। घटनास्थल पर जाकर सबूत एकत्र करने का काम भी किया गया है। गृह मंत्री के वक्तव्य से संतुष्ट न होकर सदन में विपक्ष की नेता सुषमा स्वराज ने सरकार से बलात्कारियों को मौत की सजा देने को कहा।

हम फास्ट ट्रैक कोर्ट के माध्यम से अगर इन लोगों को जल्दी से जल्दी सजा दिलाने का काम नहीं करेंगे। अब दो-एक को फांसी पर लटका दीजिये। मैं यहां से कहना चाहती हूं ये घटनाएं बंद हो जाएगी।

सूचना और प्रसारण मंत्री मनीष तिवारी ने आज विपक्षी दलों से अनुरोध किया कि वे खाद्य सुरक्षा विधेयक को संसद में पास होने दें। नई दिल्ली में एक पुस्तक विमोचन समारोह के दौरान संवाददाताओं से अलग से बातचीत में श्री तिवारी ने कहा कि विधेयक से इक्यासी करोड़ भारतीयों को भोजन मिलेगा और यह दलगत राजनीति की भेंट नहीं चढ़ना चाहिए।

सरकार ने देश में कर नीतियों और कर कानूनों की समीक्षा और उन्हें लागू करने के उद्देश्य से कर प्रशासन सुधार आयोग की स्थापना की है। श्री पार्थसारथी शोम की अध्यक्षता वाला यह आयोग समय समय पर रिपोर्ट पेश करेगा, जिन्हें देश की करव्यवस्था की क्षमता बढ़ाने के लिए लागू किया जा सकेगा। इस आयोग का कार्यकाल १८ महीने होगा और यह कर प्रशासन के मौजूदा तंत्र और कारोबारी प्रक्रियाओं की समीक्षा करके उपयुक्त उपायों का सुझाव देगा। आयोग कर आधार को और विकसित करने तथा बेहतर कर परिपालन व्यवस्था लागू करने के उपाय भी सुझाएगा। आयोग करों और आर्थिक अपराधों का पता लगाकर उनकी रोकथाम के लिए पूर्व विश्लेषण भी करेगा।

उच्चतम न्यायालय ने पूर्व प्रधान न्यायाधीश के जी बालकृष्णन को उनके कथित गलत व्यवहार और बेनामी सम्पत्ति खरीदने के कारण राष्ट्रीय मानवाधिकार आयोग के अध्यक्ष पद से हटाने की मांग वाली जनहित याचिका पर केन्द्र से जवाब मांगा है। न्यायमूर्ति बी एस चौहान की अध्यक्षता वाली पीठ ने केन्द्र से तीन सप्ताह में जवाब दाखिल करने को कहा है। संक्षिप्त सुनवाई के दौरान पीठ ने कानून और न्याय मंत्रालय से इस मुद्दे पर दायर पहली शिकायत की स्थिति के बारे में न्यायालय को सूचित करने को कहा।

गुजरात में नर्मदा नदी में बाढ़ के कारण नर्मदा, भरूच और वडोदरा जिलों से दस हजार से ज्यादा लोगों को वहां से निकाला गया है। सरकारी सूत्रों के हवाले से हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि इन निचले इलाकों में पचास से ज्यादा गांवों के लोगों को सतर्क कर दिया गया है।

In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party government foiled the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's 'Chaurasi Kosi Parikrama Yatra' and arrested top VHP leaders including Ashok Singhal and Praveen Togadia, apart from scores of VHP-backed saints, yesterday. A state government spokesman announced that all those arrested, except Singhal, will remain in jail for the next 14 days. Official sources said, the step was taken by the state government to deter other supporters of the banned 'Yatra' from joining the programme, which is to continue till September 13.
Our correspondent reports that about 2 thousand VHP workers have been arrested across UP in the past three days.
 BJP leaders protested the state governments action banning the yatra. The Congress targeted both the Samajwadi Party and the BJP over VHP's yatra in Ayodhya.
Meanwhile, Acharya Satendra Das, the chief priest of the makeshift temple at Ayodhya, told newsmen that VHP's yatra was politically motivated. He alleged that saints were being used for vested interests.State Police Inspector General, Law & Order R K Vishwakarma said strict vigil action has been ordered in six districts where the minority community resides in sizeable proportions.

All the five accused involved in the gang rape incident have been arrested and the case will be run in a fast track court to ensure speedy justice to the woman. The fifth and final accused Mohammed Salim Ansari was arrested in North West Delhi yesterday and will be produced in Mumbai court today. Taking a major step in the case, Maharashtra government has appointed noted lawyer Ujjwal Nikam as the special public prosecutor. The case has now been transferred to Mumbai crime branch which will hunt for the missing mobile phone used to shoot pictures of the brutal attack and will carry out further interrogations with the accused. The Government has said that an estimated 614.3 lakh tonnes foodgrains will be required to ensure successful implementation of the proposed Food Security Act.As per an official release the procurement will also ensure that farmers get more for their produce. The government has set the current minimum support price for wheat at 12 rupees 85 paisa per kilogram and for paddy it is  12 rupees 50 paisa per kilogram.About 75 per cent village population will get foodgrain at a highly subsidized price after implementation of the proposed Act. They will be provided wheat at the rate of 2 rupees per kilogram and rice at the rate of 3 rupees per kilogram.

Union Rural Development Minister, Jairam Ramesh said that Women Self Help Groups will be motivated to promote use of bio-toilets in rural areas of the country. United Nations experts are to start a probe today on the site of an alleged Syrian chemical weapons attack after Damascus struck an accord with visiting UN disarmament envoy Angela Kane yesterday.Syria's opposition says more than one thousand three hundred people died when President Bashar al-Assad's regime forces unleashed chemical weapons against rebel-held towns east and southwest of  the capital Damascus on August the 21st. The United States pointed the finger of blame at the Syrian government.
 Damascus has strongly denied that it carried out such an attack, and instead blamed the rebels.Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameroon have jointly warned Syria that it would face a serious response if it is found that Syrian forces indeed used chemical weapons on civilians.

 In Iraq, a wave of bomb attacks across the country has killed at least 46 people. Police sources said the worst affected were Baghdad, northern city of Mosul and the central city of Baquba which were hit by numerous blasts.
Violence during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which ended in early August, left more than 670 people dead. The rising level of casualties comes amid heightened tensions between Sunni and Shia Muslims. Sunnis say they are being marginalised by the Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki's Shia-led government.

In Uttar Pradesh, the flood situation has been aggravated as many districts of Bundelkhand have also come in the grip of floods along with the entire Terai region and eastern parts of the state. South Korea will take on India while Bangladesh will meet Oman in the two Pool B matches of the 9th Men's Asia Cup hockey tournament at Ipoh in Malaysia today.
Yesterday, Holders South Korea started their title defence with a resounding 8-0 win against Bangladesh in their first Pool B match.
In the second Pool A match yesterday, Three-time champions Pakistan became the first team to qualify for the semifinals after defeating Malaysia 4-1.Meanwhile, in an earlier Pool A match, Japan defeated Chinese Taipei 5-1 to register their first win in the tournament.
In the opening match played on Saturday, India hammered Oman 8-NIL.
