Chennai Open Tennis: Somdev cruises past higher seed Hajek to enter second round

Somdev Devvarman cruised past higher-ranked Czech opponent Jan Hajek in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in only 69 minutes and advanced to the second round of Men's Singles in the Chennai Open Tennis tournament.

Former India Davis Cupper Prakash Amritraj also won his match 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2 against Rufin Guillaume of France.

In Men's doubles, Thai brothers Sanchai Ratiwana and Sonchat Ratiwana dashed the hopes of defending champion Leander Paes and Edouard Roger Vasselin of France 7-6 (7) 6-1 and breezed into the quarterfinal.

Saurashtra & Mumbai in knock-out round of Ranji Trophy

Riding on a splendid bowling by debutant seamer Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, Saurashtra beat Madhya Pradesh by 227 runs on the fourth and final day of their Ranji Trophy Group A match and entered into knockout stage.

Playing his first Ranji Trophy, Jadeja scalped six wickets in Madhya Pradesh's second innings giving away 51 runs off 26.4 overs. After scoring 242 in the first innings, Saurashtra restricted MP to 135. With this win, Saurashtra earned six points and improved their position with 23 points.

Mumbai are through to the knock out stages, despite a draw, after winning three points against Gujarat on the basis of their first innings lead, on the last day of the group A Ranji Trophy match Mumbai today.

The hosts failed to register their second outright win of the season, as they were unable to chase the score of 135, after they had bundled out the opposition for 337.

National Archery Ch’ship:Deepika medal haul seven,Dola six

In the 33rd Senior National Archery Championships that concluded in Chennai on Dec 31st, Deepika Kumari reigned supreme with seven medals while veteran Dola Banerjee marked her return to form picking up six medals.

Representing Steel Plant Sports Board, Deepika won two gold, three silver and two bronze in the women's recurve section. Railway archer Dola coming back from a long injury lay-off claimed two gold, two silver amd two bronze medals.

In the Men's section, Railways archer Kapil won the individual Olympic round, even as Rahul Banerjee had the maxium number of five medals, which included one gold, two silver and two bronze.
