Four naxals killed in police encounter in Gadchiroli dist, Maharashtra

Four naxals were killed in police encounter in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli disrict today. Police suspect that more ultras were killed in the gun battle that ensued after a patrol party came under fire from insurgents in the wee hours near Bhatpar village in the district bordering Chhattisgarh. ASP (Aheri) Rahul Shrirame said that police have intensified combing in the region following the skirmish.


5.8 magnitude quake hits Kashmir Valley; people panic but no report of damage or injury

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Kashmir Valley this afternoon. The tremor lasted for around 10 seconds and was recorded at 12:02 PM. There was no report of any damage to property or injuries to any person, but the tremors created panic among the people of the Valley.
Justice Khanwilkar is new Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh

Justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar, took oath as the new Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court today. Earlier he was Judge of the Bombay High Court. Governor Urmila Singh administered the oath of Office to Justice Khanwilkar at a function in the Rajbhawan in Shimla.
'My vote is not for sale' campaign launched in poll-bound K'taka by social activists

The National Election Watch, a body of social activists, has launched a campaign called “My vote is not for sale” in Karnataka where Assembly elections are declared on May 5th. Briefing the media persons in Bangalore today, the members of the body said that the campaign will create awareness among voters not to fall prey to appeasements. A member of the organisation Prof. Trilochan Sastry said campaign will spread the message of fair election through street plays, distribute pamphlets, send SMS and screen videos comprising of celebrities. Based on the affidavits filed by the State cabinet ministers in the Election Commission, the body of social activists has concluded that 42 percent among them have self declared criminal cases and 75 percent of them are crorepatis. Among the MLAs in Karnataka Assembly, it is said that 131 out of 215 MLAs are crorepatis. It has also come out with the statistics that the average asset of a minister in the state stands at 6.96 crore rupees. It also adds that average asset of MLAs in the State Assembly grew by 364 percent from 2004 election to 2008 election.
MP Congress party begins Parivartan Yatra in state

In Madhya Pradesh, the main opposition party Congress today began its Parivartan Yatra from Tikri village of Sidhi district. State congress president Kantilal Bhuria and leader of opposition in the state assembly Ajay Singh addressed a public meeting on this occasion. This Yatra is being organised to mobilise public support for a change of regime in the state. The legislative assembly elections are due this year in the state. The Yatra will cover all the 230 assembly segments.
Bail plea hearing of Odisha Min's son in dowry case deferred

In Odisha, a local court today once again deferred hearing of the bail petition of dowry torture accused Raja Shree Mohanty till tomorrow. Raja Shree is the son of former minister Raghunath Mohanty. District Sessions Judge V Jayashree adjourned the hearing as Raja Shree's lawyer today sought time to furnish some documents relating to the bail application. The judge had yesterday adjourned the proceedings following a time petition filed by the petitioner and the matter was posted for today.
Raja Shree was arrested by the Human Rights Protection Cell on March 17 near Cuttack for allegedly
torturing his wife for dowry.
World Bank team lauds MP for Natn'l Livelihood Mission achievements

A team of World Bank has lauded Madhya Pradesh’s achievements under National Livelihoods Mission. In a meeting with Panchayat and Rural Developments officials in Bhopal yesterday, team members stressed the need to promote innovations in the context of livelihoods activities in the state. They gave suggestion about appointing Bank-Mitras to provide banking facilities to rural beneficiaries easily. These Bank-Mitras will be selected from among members of self-help groups.Our correspondent reports that 46 development blocks of 10 districts of the state have been covered under the project’s first phase. So far, 5,234 new self-help groups have been formed while 5,795 old self-help-groups have also been linked with the mission. Besides, 655 rural organisations have also been formed. Notable works have also been carried out towards revolving funds and providing bank linkage to groups. Baseline survey of 14 lakh beneficiaries in mission’s intensive activity areas is being carried out and details about their socio-economic condition are being compiled. Similarly, village profiles of about 6000 villages are also being prepared. This initiative will help in exact assessment of positive change brought about in these families’ socio-economic condition after conclusion of Livelihoods Mission.
Puri-Durg Express hits goods train in Odisha; five injured

In Odisha, passengers of Puri-Durg Express train had a miraculous escape as it collided with a goods train near Kalijhari, a few kilometers from Bhubaneswar late wednesday evening. The incident took place between Patia and Barang Railway station at 8.15 pm. At least five persons have been injured in the accident, while five wagons of the goods train have been derailed. According to East Coast Railway sources, the Puri-Durg Express train hit the goods train from behind which was in halt on the same railway track. Train traffic on the route has been disrupted due to the incident. However, the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
A rescue team had been sent to the accident site. The rescue team members with support from the local police have shifted the injured to a nearby hospital in Bhubaneswar. Senior railway officials have rushed to the spot.
Chief Electoral Officer in K’taka: Cash haul of Rs 41 lakh seized by Bellary police

The Chief Electoral Officer in Karnataka, Anil Kumar Jha today informed that a cash haul of 41 lakh rupees was seized by Bellary police last night. In two seperate incidents, the police seized cash worth 33 lakh rupees in Cowl bazar and another eight lakh rupees were seized from a person 10 kms away from Bellary on Ananthpur road. Talking about the implementation of the election code of conduct in the state, he informed that Bangalore Municipal Corporation has been asked to remove all hoardings carrying the photographs of MLAs.

He also stressed that canidates will be asked to stop use of SMS and other forms of digital media for campaigning, 48 hours before the Assembly election scheduled on May 5th. Mr.Jha informed that proper arrangement has been made for 37,000 service voters and over three lakh government employees involved in election duty so as to enable them to cast their postal ballot.

5th, 9th standard Goa students to be provided with e-notepads in June

Fifth and ninth standard students studying in Goa will be provided with e-notepads from the first week of June this year. Chief Minister Manohar Parriker informed the assembly today that 46,207 applications have been received by state Education Department to avail benefit of the scheme.

Parriker said each of the notepads will cost the government 8500 Rs. to 10,000 Rs. 40,000 students will be benifitted in the first phase of the csheme at an estimated cost of fifty crore rupees.
