Congress returns to power in Karnataka after seven years winning absolute majority

The Congress has returned to power in Karnataka after seven years winning absolute majority in the Assembly polls. Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar of the BJP-led Government has announced that he will submit his resignation to the Governor on Wednesday evening.

Right from the beginning of the counting on Wednesday morning, Congress was ahead in most of the constituencies and finished winning 121 seats out of 223 constituencies which went to the polls on 5th of this month. It almost swept BJP stronghold Dakshin Kannada and made in roads in other areas as well. Election in one constituency - Periyapatna was deferred to 28th May due to the death of BJP Candidate.

In the final tally, BJP and JD(S) both ended with winning 40 seats each. BJP's bete noire Yeddyurappa's Karnataka Janatha Paksha Party, KJP won 6 and others including Independents got 16 seats.

BJP suffered heavy reverses losing Deputy Chief Minister Eshwarappa and 11 other Ministers including S.A.Ramadas, V.Somanna, B.N.Bache Gowda, A. Narayanasamy and Murgesh Mirani in the hustings.

Congress too had reverses when KPCC President, Dr. G. Parameshwara and former Union Minister C.M.Ibrahim losing the polls. JD(S) President Kumaraswamy had a mixed fortune when he won the Ramanagar seat while his wife Anita Kumaraswamy lost Channapatna constituency. However, his brother H.D.Revanna coasted to victory in Holenarasipura of Hasan district. Former Chief Minister S. Bangarapp's two sons crossed swords in Soraba constituency with Madhu Bangarappa, JDS winning the seat defeating his brother Kumar Bangarappa of Congress. Karnataka Makkal Paksha candidate Ashok Kheny won from Bidar South defeating sitting JD(S) MLA Bandeppa Kashempur by a margin of 3000 votes.

Other prominent winners in the Assembly elections are Congress leader Siddaramaiah, Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar of BJP, KJP leader Yeddyurappa, former Union Minister and Kannada Cine Star, M.H.Ambareesh of Congress, Deputy Chief Minister and BJP candidate, R. Ashoka, BSR Congress Party Chief and former Minister, B. Sriramulu, Congress candidate Dr. Ajay Dharam Singh, son of former Chief Minister Dharam Singh, Priyanka M. Kharge son of Union Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge of Congress and former Union Minister V.Srinivasa Prasad of Congress. Sitting JD(S) MP N. Chaluvaraya Swamy has also won.

Prominent losers of the KJP are Shoba Kharand Laje and Renukaacharya.
PM: Congress victory in K’taka is rejection of BJP's ideology

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi today hailed the party's showing in Karnataka polls, saying the result was a rejection of BJP's ideology and suggested the same would be repeated in the Lok Sabha elections as well. Dr. Singh praised the efforts of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, saying he took a leading role in the campaigning for the polls. Dr. Singh was talking to reporters outside the Parliament House.

On the Lok Sabha elections, the Prime Minister said, the people of the country know what is what and they will reject the BJP ideology as the result in Karnataka shows. He congratulated Congress workers in Karnataka for the outcome. Sonia Gandhi, when asked to comment on the Karnataka result, said, she was very happy with the victory in Karnataka and it was a joint effort.

Expressing confidence that Congress will get absolute majority in Karnataka, Finance Minister P Chidambaram promised that there will be a stable, progressive and hardworking government in the state for next five years. Mr. Chidambaram also ruled out early general elections, saying the UPA government has a lot of work to complete.
30 killed, 15 injured as bus plunges into river in HP

At least 30 persons were killed and 15 were injured on Wednesday when an overcrowded private bus plunged into the turbulent Beas river on Kullu-Mandi national highway. The ill-fated bus was on its way to Ani from Kullu when it skidded off road and rolled down into the river near Jhiri, 20-km from Kullu.

Twelve bodies have been recovered while 15 persons were rescued and rushed to hospital, Deputy Commissioner, Kullu, said. There were more than 50 persons on board the bus at the time of mishap, he said, adding the driver jumped off the vehicle before it plunged into the river.

Relief and rescue teams have reached the spot and efforts are being made to recover the bodies and pull the bus out of the river, the official said.

According to sources, more than two dozen persons are feared trapped in the submerged bus. The bus which toppled up side down after the accident, completely submerged under water and only the tyres were visible, sources said.
One jawan killed, 3 injured in Chhattisgarh naxal encounter

A security personnel of Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was killed and three others were injured in an encounter with naxalites on Wednesday in the state's Maoist-hit Sukma district, police said.

PTI quoting a senior police official reports that the incident took place in the jungles of Kistaram police station area of the district when the CAF jawans were on a combing operation in the region early on Wednesday morning.

When the patrolling party reached near the forest of Kistaram village, the naxals opened indiscriminate fire on them, killing one jawan and injuring three others. Naxals also looted three rifles of jawans, he said. The killed personnel was identified as - constable Parshu Markam.
Kerala to give autonomous status to state colleges

The Kerala cabinet on Wednesday decided to provide autonomous status to government and aided Arts and Science Colleges and Engineering colleges in accordance with UGC guidelines.

An expert committee would be constituted to examine the applications forwarded by educational institutions that seek autonomous status, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters after a cabinet meeting.

The self-financing private educational institutions would not be considered for autonomous status now, he said in response to a question.

In an another significant decision, government resolved to hand over to the State Public Service Commission the charge of appointing all non-teaching staff in Universities in the state.
Tiger census begins in Odisha

In Odisha, a tiger census began on Wednesday at Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Angul district. As many as 45 units are engaged in the census of wild cats. The counting will be conducted in nine ranges of the forest reserve spread over around 965 square kilometre. Every unit is headed by a forester or a guard accompanied by two-three watchers. The counting of animals will continue till 10th of this month. In the last census, there were 12 royal Bengal tigers and 35 leopards in the tiger reserve.
