The Central Vigilance Commission has sought a detailed report from the CBI over the Centre's interference in its investigation into the coal blocks allocation scam. The CBI has also been asked to submit its latest status report on the case to the Commission.Official sources said in New Delhi today that the CVC has taken cognizance of reports citing interference in the CBI's probe in the coal blocks allocation case. The move came after it came to light that certain changes were made in the agency's draft status report on the case submitted to the Supreme Court.

A Delhi court today awarded life imprisonment to three of the five convicts in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots. District and Sessions Judge J R Aryan pronounced the punishment to Balwan Khokkar, Girdhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal who were held guilty of murdering five Sikhs during the riots that had broken out after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.Two other convicts -- an ex-councillor Mahender Yadav and ex-MLA Kishan Khokkar, who were held guilty of rioting, were awarded three-year imprisonment. Both Yadav and Khokkar were, however, granted bail by the court.Earlier, during the arguments on quantum of sentence, CBI has sought death sentence for Balwan Khokkar, Girdhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal.

The Union Cabinet today approved a policy for developing aviation hubs in the country. Briefing the media in New Delhi this evening, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said an Inter-Ministerial Committee will work out modalities for the policy and refine its details.

Standing Inter Ministerial Committee would be set up in order to work out the modalities of the hub policies and redefine its details they have tasked with the responsibility of doing so as expeditiously as possible.
The Cabinet also gave its approval for setting up of an autonomous body named as National Skill Development Authority which will co-ordinate and harmonise skill development efforts of the government and the private sector to achieve targets of the 12th plan and beyond.The Cabinet also decided to declare 2013 as water conservation year.
There would be a number of mass awareness activities that would be undertaken during the water conservation year 2013 with emphasise on sensitizing people on water related issues encouraging them to use it judiciously and conserve it . The initiative would be led by the Ministry for Water resource.

The Cabinet Committee on Unique Identification Authority of India today approved cost estimates of Phase IV of the UID Scheme. It involves an estimated cost of about 3436 crore rupees.The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the proposal for revival of five closed units of Fertilizer Corporation of India Limited, FCIL. The units are located at Sindri, Talcher, Ramagundam, Gorakhpur and Korba. Under the revival scheme, government loan and interest on it amounting to 10,644 crore rupees will be waived.

A Delhi Court sent Five accused, including Railway Minister P K Bansal's nephew to judicial custody till 20th May in connection with 10 crore rupee railway bribery case.Bansal's nephew Vijay Singla, suspended Railway Board member Mahesh Kumar, and three other accused Ajay Garg, businessman Sandeep Goyal and Managing Director of GG Tronics India Pvt Ltd, Narain Rao Manjunath, were produced before Special CBI Judge Swarna Kanta Sharma after expiry of their CBI custody.CBI moved an application seeking to send them to judicial custody, saying the investigation in the case is in progress and it is still at an initial stage.One of the accused Sushil Dagga is yet to be arrested.After an emphatic win in the legislative Assembly election in Karnataka yesterday, Congress party has begun the process to selection of the Chief Minister. Talking to media persons in Bangalore today, the Chief Minister aspirant Siddaramaiah told media persons that senior leaders A.K.Antony, Ambika Soni and Madhusudan Mistry will come to Bangalore to hold consultations with party legislators on probable candidate for Chief Ministership.

The Centre has asked states to immediately start buying sugar from the open market to ensure supply to ration card holders as it is left with the stock to meet requirement for current month only. In a letter to state chief ministers, Food Minister K V Thomas said that the centre has allocated sugar quota up to May this year and the states must take immediate action for procurement for future requirements. The Food Minister also asked states to initiate steps immediately to ensure that the supply of sugar through PDS is not affected during the period of transition.

(Snapping three days of gains, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange declined 51 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 19,939, today, on profit-booking by investors. During the session, the Sensex had again crossed the 20,000 mark. The Nifty fell 19 points, to 6,050. Stock markets in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea ended mixed. The rupee weakened 9 paise, to a one-week low of 54.25 against the dollar. Gold surged 285 rupees, to 27,850 rupees per ten grams in Delhi. Silver advanced 300 rupees, to 46,000 rupees per kilo.And Brent crude oil futures slipped below 104 dollars a barrel, while US crude fell 54 cents, to 96.08 dollars a barrel. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today said it has completed investigations against banks following the Cobrapost expose. The bank said it will take action if they are found guilty of violating prudential banking norms. The Apex Bank Governor D Subbarao said this in a press conference on the sidelines of the RBI's central board meeting at Srinagar.

The trio were produce before the court of additional chief judicial magistrate at Bidhannagar after the expiry of 14 days police custody.

Body of Sanaullah Ranjay, a Pakistani prisoner who died in a Chandigarh hospital today has been handed over to officials of Pakistan High Commission . The Body was taken to Chandigarh Airport, to be flown to Pakistan. Two Pakistani diplomats and two relatives of Sanaullah were among the persons who took possession of the body.

India today again called for a meeting with concerned Pakistani authorities to take immediate steps to enhance the safety, security and humane treatment of Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails. Responding to a media query on the death of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said in New Delhi there is an urgent need to examine the recommendations of the Indo-Pak Joint Judicial Committee which visited Pakistani jails recently. He said both sides should also take stock of the measures currently in place for ensuring safety, security and humane treatment of prisoners in each other's jails.

Former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's son Ali Haider Gilani was today kidnapped in Pakistan's Punjab province by unidentified gunmen. The personal secretary and a bodyguard of Haider Gilani were shot dead by the gunmen.Haider was participating in a campaign meeting at Multan city this afternoon when the gunmen opened fire at his supporters. Five others were injured in the attack. No group claimed responsibility for the attack or the abduction.The banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has warned it will target secular parties like the Pakistan People's Party and Awami National Party ahead of the May 11 general election.The threats have forced the parties to virtually stop campaigning for the polls.

A Pakistani court today declared that US drone strikes in the country's lawless tribal belt were illegal and directed the Foreign Ministry to move a resolution against the attacks in the United Nations. The Peshawar High Court issued the verdict adn observed that the strikes must be declared a war crime as they kill innocent people.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid arrived in Beijing on a two-day visit to China. During his visit, Mr. Khurshid will hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and will also meet Premier Li Keqiang. Besides the border incident, Mr Li's proposed visit is also high on Mr Khurshid's agenda.

Indian paddlers gave the country a good start in the singles round of the ongoing 19th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship in New Delhi today.
Sania Mirza and her American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands made an early exit from the Madrid Open tennis tournament after losing their second round match in straight sets. World champion Viswanthan Anand began his campaign at the Norway Chess 2013 super tournament in Sandnes with a quick draw in round one against Levon Aronian of Armenia.

In the Indian Premier League match played in Mohali today, Rajasthan Royals beat Kings Eleven Punjab by eight wicket to close in on play offs. The other match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors India is in progress in Pune. Kolktta won the toss and elected to bat.

Supreme Court today refused to interfere in 8.5 billion dollars Cairn-Vedanta deal and dismissed a PIL challenging its validity. A two judge bench said that the decision by the Centre and ONGC pertaining to the deal was taken after due deliberation and the court cannot sit in judgement on the decision taken by parties in a business deal.
