The country is gearing up for another phase of technological revolution. The 20 thousand crore rupee super optic highway by National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) will connect all the 2.5 lakh panchayats in the country and last mile connectivity will be given through mobile-wireless broadband. Using Gigabit Passive Optical Network technology the NOFN project brings home a point-to-multipoint scheme that enables a single optical fiber to serve multiple premises . Initially the Government of India has selected Andhra Pradesh , Tripura and Rajasthan where the pilot project of NOFN is being implemented . The deployment of e-services is a challenge by itself in these panchayats with the content, services and applications coming from both the private sector and the government. However, NOFN has the potential to transform many aspects of our lives including video, data, and internet, telephone services in areas such as education, business, entertainment, environment, health and e-governance. These services will be offered by TSPs and ISPs towards fulfilling the National Telecom Policy 2012. HENRY RAJ/AIR NEWS/VISAKHAPATNAM

The Finance Ministry has asked public sector banks to limit the amount of loan write-offs and sought details of recoveries made by them in the six years ending 2011-12 with an aim to improve the finances of PSU lenders. It has also asked the banks to ensure that the amount written off by banks as bad loans does not exceed the cash recovery made during the year. In a recent communication to the heads of all public sector banks, the Finance Ministry said, in case there is more write off than the recovery made by the bank in a given year, the reasons for the same may also be provided to the Ministry.

The Odisha government has decided to provide safe drinking water to the people, residing within a radius of a maximum 250 metres. Our Correspondent reports that the state government will complete all pipe water supply projects linking the main villages of each of its gram panchayats within two years.

In order to achieve this target, the state government has decided to construct overhead tanks in each of the rural pipe water supply projects. Till date, such overhead tanks in about three thousand out of about 8 thousand water supply projects have already been constructed. If such well-intentioned initiatives on water do not meet the fate of watery promises alone, then the dream of the National Rural Drinking Water Programme of providing 55 litres of safe drinking water per head per day to the rural populace would soon become a welcome reality in Odisha.G C DASH/AIR NEWS/CUTTACK
