Home Min presiding over Eastern Zonal Council meet underway in Kolkata

The 20th meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council to discuss key issues of the four eastern states, has begun in Kolkata this afternoon.

The Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde is presiding over the deliberations.The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee,Governor of Jharkhand,Syed Ahmed,Water Resources Minister of Bihar, Vijay Kumar Choudhary,Finance Minister of Odisha,Prasnna Acharya and top officials of the four states are present at the meeting.

Our Kolkata Correspondent understands that issues relating to internal security, safety on national highways, matters related to police administration, border area development programmes and issues related to the four eastern states are likely to figure during the deliberations.

Biodiversity Express on two-week trip to Punjab

The Science Express-Biodiversity Special (SEBS) train which is on a two weeks trip to Punjab, has reached Jalandhar City railway station from Patiala today.

A unique collaborative initiative of Department of Science & Technology and Ministry of Environment & Forests, the train will remain at Jalandhar till April 20th.

AIR Jalandhar Correspondent reports that the state-of-the-art exhibition displayed in 16 coaches of the train, creates awareness of the biodiversity of India among the masses, especially students.

It also tells about climate change and similar issues. In one coach, a Kids Zone has been created for them to indulge in fun-filled activities, games and puzzles in science, mathematics and environment.

From Jalandhar, the train would move to Verka in Amritsar on April 21 and later to Pathankot on April 25th. It would reach Bajalta in Jammu on April 28 after completing Punjab’s tour.
Jawan killed in firing by NDFB militants in Assam

In Assam, one army jawan was killed when stray bullets hit him this morning in Sonitpur district.

Army PRO S S Phoogat said in Guwahati that the incident occurred at Chariduwar area when bullets fired by suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland, NDFB militants, hit a member of the road opening party.

They were on their way to find out if any explosives were kept by the miscreants. The Army has cordoned off the area to nab the culprits. Further investigations are on.
5 killed, 7 injured in J & K road accidents

In Jammu and Kashmir at least five persons were killed and 7 others injured in two separate road accidents in Doda and Ramban districts of Jammu division on Wednesday. In the first accident 4 persons were killed and two others injured when a Tata sumo they were travelling skidded off the road and fell down into two hundred meter deep gorge on Batote- Kishtwar road near Premnagar. In another accident one person was killed and five others injured when a small vehicle in which they were travelling skidded off the road on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Sher-bibi in Banihal area of Ramban District.
Filing of nominations for Karntaka Assembly Elections ends

In Karntaka, filing of nominations for Assembly Elections ended on Wednesday evening. 20th of this month is the last date for withdrawal and polling is scheduled to take place on 5th of May. Meanwhile, election activities have gather momentum with candidates addressing corner meetings.

The Election Commission of India has announced alternative documents for the voters who do not posses Electronic Photo identity card. The Chief Electoral Officer, Anil Kumar Jha said 23 documents including the authenticated photo voter slip, PAN card, Service Identity cards issued to government employees, bank passbook, student ID cards, Aadhar card can be used for identity during voting.
Security stepped up in Delhi after Bangalore blast

Security has been stepped up in the national capital on Wednesday following the blast near the BJP office in Bangalore. According to Delhi police, extra vigil is being maintained across the city. Vigil at railway stations, bus terminals , airport, Metro stations, markets and other crowded places has also been stepped up.
BSF seize 52 kilogram heroin in Punjab

In Punjab, Border Security Force has yet again succeeded in thwarting the evil designs of anti-national elements by seizing 52 kilogram Heroin from two separate places. This is the largest consignment seized by the vigilant BSF personnel in a single day in this year in Punjab. With this seizure, over 144 kilogram Heroin has been seized by BSF in Punjab till date.

Inspector General, BSF, Punjab Frontier, Aditya Mishra has told AIR Jalandhar Correspondent that 32 packets of the contraband had been seized from Ferozepur sector on the intervening night of 16/17 April and 20 packets from Amritsar sector in the wee hours, today. In both the cases, Pakistan smugglers used plastic pipes to transfer the packets of Heroin into Indian territory from across the fence.
