NEWS IN ORDER
GOGOI
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi yesterday said that some "outside
third force" may be involved in the brutal killing of a tea estate owner and his
wife in Tinsukia district last week, amid apprehensions about Maoist
involvement in the violence. "I cannot say for sure but may be some outside force
is involved in the killing. I am not ruling that out. We have ordered an inquiry
and that will bring out the truth," Gogoi told reporters in Guwahati on the
sidelines of a Congress party event. Asked if Maoists elements are involved in the
incident, he said "I do not have definite information regarding involvement of
Maoists. But it is a fact that Maoists have started large scale propaganda in some
particular belts in the state. MKB (Asia) Pvt Ltd proprietor Mridul Kumar
Bhattacharya, and his wife Reeta were burnt alive when a group of disgruntled
workers set afire their bungalow in Kunapathar tea estate on December 26.

TUKI:
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki joined  the nation in
mourning the death of 23-year-old gang-rape victim in New Delhi. In a statement
yesterday, Tuki said, "This is really saddening. My heart goes out for the brave
girl and her family members, particularly the parents who had pinned high
hopes on her like in every family. Let this be a wake-up moment for all of us. Let
us resolve to make a better society where women share equal rights and respect,
he said. The chief minister called for exemplary punishment to the guilty and
extended support for stricter laws for crimes committed against women. Tuki
said similar incidents that violate the rights of women or their modesty would
not be tolerated in his state.

FIRE:
A village head was charred to death in a fire that  gutted his house at
Koyu Village in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, officialssaid yesterday.
The 78-year-old Gaon Bura (village head) was burnt alive in the fire, the cause of which was yet to be ascertained. The body was charred beyond recognition in the
fire that destroyed all his household items. East Siang Deputy Commissioner R K
Mishra announced Rs 2,000 as immediate relief. He said police investigation was
on to find out the cause of the incident.

ILP:
In Arunachal Pradesh, security personnel deployed at the Banderdewa
security check gate near hear have recovered 703 fake inner line permits from
visitors, mostly from neighbouring Assam, in the past one week, police said. Two
persons, allegedly involved in the sale of fake ILPs, were arrested from
Lakhimpur district of Assam. Capital Superintendent of Police, Surinder Kumar,
said the fake IPLs, both permanent and temporary ones, bore forged signatures
and seals of various issuing authorities of the state government. With assistance
from the Assam administration, the Arunachal Police have arrested two persons
of Fatehpur under Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district on Friday. A search
operation has been launched to detect such fake ILPs in the Capital Complex
and to nab other culprits who manufacture and sell fake ILPs in capital region,
the Superintendent of police added.

TRIBUTE
The socio-religious organization of Sein Raij Shillong, along with the
Hynniewtrep community of Meghalaya, yesterday observed the 150
th
 death
anniversary of freedom fighter, U Kiang Nangbah. Rich floral tribute was
offered to the national freedom fighter who hailed  from the Khasi Pnar
community of the State at a public function in Shillong. U Kiang Nangbah
sacrificed his life for the cause of India’s freedom. U Kiang Nangbah who gave a
stiff resistance against the Britishers was brought for trial and on the

 December 1862 he was hanged at 5.00 p.m at Iawmusiang, Jowai, in Jaintia
Hills of Meghalaya. The public function was participated by Deputy Chief
Minister, Bindo M. Lanong and Meghalaya Legislator, Paul Lyngdoh released a
book on U Kiang Nangbah on the occasion. In his welcome address, the General
Secretary of Sein Raij Niamtre Shillong, Dr. Omarlin Kyndiah termed U Kiang
Nangbah as a great hero of the Pnar community, who  resisted the colonial
rulers.  
            ***********************GNLA:
Three militants, including a woman of the outlawed  Garo National
Liberation Army were arrested from South West Khasi Hills district of
Meghalaya, BSF sources said yesterday. Acting on a tip-off on the presence of
GNLA cadres in Karaigora area of the district, BSF  and the state police
commandos conducted a raid and captured 20-year-old women along with her
child from Lower Puksora village. Later, on the information provided by her,
the security forces apprehended two GNLA cadres. A 0.22 mm revolver and six
GNLA demand notes were seized from the three who, confessed that they were
GNLA cadres and were involved in extortion and other militant activities in the
district. The Centre has categorized the GNLA as an outlawed terror
organization in January this year. It is involved in kidnapping, abduction and extortion and killing of security forces and civilians in at least five western Garo
Hills district.
