Our correspondent reports that a pall of gloom has fallen in Sarabjit Singh's native village Bikiwind in Taran Taran district.

Bhikiwind in Tarn Taran district of Punjab, the native village of Sarabjit Singh is under shock. Markets and schools were closed as a mark of respect to the son of the soil who could not win the battle of life after being brutally beaten up by his jail inmates in Pakistan. Women were wailing inside his under construction house. The sorrow of loosing a dear one was writ large on the face of family members of Sarabjit. Unable to control their tears, both the daughters Swapandeep and Poonam and their mother Sukhpreet  and aunt Dalbir Kaur were inconsolable. Three day state mourning in Punjab has been declared. With Amit Marwaha, Rajesh Bali/AIR News/Bhikiwind-Tarn Taran
Earlier Sarabjit Singh's body was handed over to Indian officials after an autopsy done by a 6 member medical board of the Jinnah Hospital in Lahore. External Affairs Minsitry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said India never considered  the 49-year-old Sarabjit Sarabjit guilty of the charges imposed on him by Pakistan. Both the Houses of Parliament today expressed deep sense of shock and sorrow on the sad demise of the Indian citizen Sarabjit Singh in Lahore. The members stood in silence as a mark of respect in memory of the departed.  External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid  said there is an extreme level of sadness throughout the country over the issue and the government will provide all support to the family of the deceased prisoner.

We are in the state of mourning.  We are sad and whatever we can do to comfort the family and support the family, is what we are today, working on. BJP has asked the UPA government to severe bilateral ties with Pakistan in the wake of brutal murder of  Sarabjit Singh. Party spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain demanded the recall of the Indian High Commissioner from Islamabad.

This is a totally cowardly act of Pakistan. There is no point in maintaining ties with Pakistan, BJP demands that all ongoing dialogue should be stopped and High Commissioner from Pakistan recall. Talking to the media in New Delhi, Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur alleged that her brother was martyred and it was an opportunity to unite and give a befitting reply to the tormentors.

An innocent Indian has been killed in Pakistan. People of all religions must come together to protest against this and stand against Pakistan. Now is not time to sit back and tolerate all this. This is the time to give a fitting reply to Pakistan. Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has issued advisory to all states asking them to step up security of all Pakistani prisoners lodged in their respective jails. Sarabjit died at Jinnah Hospital at about 1 a.m. local time.He was brought to hospital after a fatal attack by some inmates in Lahore jail.
