India and Mauritius sign MoUs on Health and Tourism
India and Mauritius today signed three Memorandums of Understanding during the state visit of President Pranab Mukherjee. One MoU was on persons with disabilities and senior citizens, another on co-operation in the field of health and medicine and the third was on co-operation in the field of tourism. Earlier in the morning President Mukherjee laid a wreath at the Samadhi of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. In his banquet speech the President had said last night that the indelible mark of Seewoosagur Ramgoolam’s vision can be seen today in the impressive progress that Mauritius has achieved over the last 45 years especially in the areas of health and education. The President’s visit to Aapravasi Ghat today was specially significant as this is a World Heritage Site where labourers from India first landed in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is their descendents that make up 70 percent of the island nation’s population and it is this population that has a special kinship with India.
Later this evening the Chief Justice of Mauritius, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius and the Leader of Opposition will call on President Pranab Mukherjee after which he will witness the celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Independence of Mauritius as chief guest
Climate change impact: Foodgrain production to come down 6% by 2020 says Agri Min |
Wheat and rice production in the country is likely to come down by six per cent by the year 2020. Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar gave this information to the Lok Sabha today in a written answer. He said the production of food grains will considerably come down as the climate change impact studies of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research have predicted. Accordingly, the crop yields of irrigated maize will also come down by 18 per cent. The Minister said the Government has taken several measures to address the impact of climate change on agriculture India's first new-gen subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay test fired India’s first new generation subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay was test fired from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur in Odisha today. It was test fired from the Launch Complex 3 of the ITR at around 55 minutes past 11 this morning. A product of indigenous technology, Nirbhay can hit the target within a range of 750 to 1000 kilometers. Confirming the test firing of Nirbhay to AIR News, Director, ITR, Chandipur, Mr. M V K V Prasad said that details of the test firing will be available only later in the day. The Union Chemical and Fertiliser Minister Srikant Jena, the scientific advisor to the Ministry of Defence Mr.B.K.Saraswat, and Mr Sekhar Dutt, the Governor of Chhattisgarh were among dignitaries present on the occasion. |
Over 25 thousand beds will be added this year in maternity wards of Government hospitals under the National Rural Health Mission. Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury in a written answer informed the Rajya Sabha today that the centre has approved enhancement of bed capacity in public health institutions based on proposals from 11 states. These include addition of 8140 beds at 142 hospitals in Uttar Pradesh, 5900 beds in 159 hospitals of Rajasthan and over 3000 beds in 20 hospitals in Andhra Pradesh.

The implementation of various development programmes has brought down distress migration of labour from villages to the urban areas. Giving this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said several studies have indicated the reduction in migration rate of farm labourers from the rural areas to the cities because of proper implementation of MGNREGA, Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme and similar other schemes guaranteeing assured wages. |
