More villages along Godavari River put on high alert in AP

In Andhra Pradesh, more villages along Godavari River have been put on high alert with water levels continuously increasing at Dhawaleswaram near Rajahmundry in East Godavari District.
Though the North Telangana districts got some respite from continuous rain since last evening, water level in Godavari River at Bhadrachalam reached 56 feet again due to heavy inflows from upper riparian areas.
Over 15 lakh cusecs of flood water released downstream posing threat of inundation to several island villages.
East Godavari district administration has issued second warning in the wake of alarming rise in the water level of Godavari at Dhawleswaram.
Meanwhile, relief operations are underway on war footing in about 300 villages that are either marooned or waterlogged.
Airdropping of food and water is in progress as several villages across 10 districts remained cut off.
About 20 thousand people are taking shelter in over hundred relief camps set up at various places.

UP: Over 4 lakh people in eight districts reeling under floods |

In Uttar Pradesh, more than four lakh people spread over eight districts are reeling under the floods as all the major rivers are in spate. In the sub Himalayan Terai region the rivers are constantly posing threat to the huge population , land, crops and livestock. In Gonda, hundreds of villagers are compelled to take shelter on the roads, flood relief camps and river embankments as Saryu, Ghaghra and Sharda have inundated their dwellings. AIR Lucknow correspondent quoting sources reports till now 151 people have lost their lives in the rain and flood related incidents in the state. CM Akhilesh Yadav has instructed the relief officials that there should be no paucity of any relief material for the people in distress.
Two firms get nod to install train collision prevention system
Railways has selected two firms for installing the much awaited Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). Medha Servo and Kernex Micro-systems were selected among six contenders, including a few multinational companies, by the Research, Designs and Standard Organisation of the Indian Railways on behalf of the Railway Board. TCAS is the safety mechanism to prevent accidents, in the 200-km-long Vikarabad-Bidar section as a pilot project. The project, which aims at preventing accidents, is estimated to cost about 18 crore rupees while the trials on Vikarabad-Bidar section in South Central zone are expected to be completed in about eight months time by February next year. A safety device designed to prevent train accidents, the TCAS is based on a combination of railway signalling data with radio communications, global position, radio frequency identification devices, software and logic. |
In West Bengal, three persons were killed in Murshidabad district in pre-poll clashes between congress and CPI (M) supporters this morning.
The fourth phase of Panchayat polls will take place in Murshidabad, Malda, Nadia and Birbhum districts tomorrow.
Post-poll violence was also reported from different districts in which altogether 83 people were injured.

In Uttar Pradesh, in the wake of sharp criticism for alleged deteriorating law and order situation in the state, the State government has replaced DIGs of two police ranges and Superintendent of Police of 10 districts.
Quoting official sources AIR Allahabad correspondent reports that transferring 18 Indian Police Service Officers late last night the government has shifted DIG Bareilly and Gorakhpur range.
District police chiefs of 10 districts of Allahabad, Agra, Gorakhpur, Mathura, Bahraich, Kushinagar, Shamli, Mahoba, Chitrakoot and Barabanki have also been replaced.

6 awarded life term in Datia Swiss woman rape case

In Madhya Pradesh, a special court of Datia yesterday sentenced six accused of Swiss woman rape case to life imprisonment. The court has also imposed a fine of ten thousand each on Bhoota, Brijesh, Rampro, Vishu, Baba and Nitin. A Swiss woman was gang-raped by six men in Datia district on 15th March this year. The woman was cycling along with her husband from Orchha to Agra. The couple was camping near Jhadia village when the accused looted them and raped the woman.

Former kerala MLA Oommen Mathew passes away

Former Kuttanad MLA and Chairman of the Kerala State Farming Corporation, Prof. Oommen Mathew died at a private hospital in Kochi last night. He was 73.
Prof Oommen Mathew was the Working Chairman of the Kerala Congress-Jacob faction.
He represented the Kuttanad Assembly constituency during 1980-82. He also served as the Chairman of the Kerala State Housing Board and the State President of the Karshaka Union.
