11 killed in HP road accident |
In Himachal Pradesh, 11 people were killed in a road accident in Nathan village near Manali in Kullu district. The Kullu SP, Vinod Dhawan told AIR that the accident occurred this afternoon and the deceased include ten women. Six persons have been injured in the accident. UP flashfloods create grim situation in many sub-Himalayan districts In Uttar Pradesh, the flash flood has created grim situation in many sub Himalayan districts including Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Bahraich, Shrawasti and Balrampur. In Lakhimpur Kheri over 200 villages are facing the threat of inundation by the water of Ghahgra river which has received 5.2 million cusec water released from Banbasa barrage. The Sharda and Suheli rivers are awollen due to the heavy downpour in hilly areas and are posing a grave threat in Kheri and Shrawasti. The water level of Ghaghra river is reportedly rising three centimeters per hour in Bahraich where flood water is feared to submerge at least half a dozen villages by three pm today, which are being evacuated. On the other hand sufficient rain has filled the shallow ponds and fields almost all over the state making kharif and paddy farmers busy sowing nursery for their upcoming paddy crops. They are seen ploughing their fields with tractors and bullocks. The sudden and sufficient rain that too at the very onset of the monsoon has filled the farmers with joy as farming activities were struggling due to paucity of irrigation water caused by insufficient supply of electricity all over the state. |
In Tamil Nadu, eight nominations have been accepted for the six vacancies of the Rajya Sabha. In a press release in Chennai, the Returning officer for the Rajya Sabha elections, A.M.P. Jamaludeen stated that out of a total of 16 nominations, eight were accepted and five were rejected.
The last date for withdrawal is on the 20th and if necessary, polling will be conducted on the 27th of this month. The tenure of six Rajya Sabha MPs gets completed on the 24th of July.
AIADMK has fielded five nominees, DMDK,DMK and CPI have nominated one candidate each for the election.
Punjab: About 60,000 employees of Power Corp on strike for two days

In Punjab, about 60 thousand employees of the Power Corporation went on strike today for two days after the talks between the employees and Punjab Government failed. The Power Corporation is facing power crisis as all its functions have been affected. The employees are demanding a new pay band, increase in grade pay and employment to all linemen. They are also demanding promotion for all employees after a certain period.

Yamuna crosses danger mark; Delhi govt evacuates people from low-lying areas

The Delhi government has begun evacuating people from low-lying areas along the banks of the Yamuna as it crossed danger mark today. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the government has taken all precautionary measures to take people to safer places.
According to Delhi Flood Control Department, the river has crossed 204.83 metres and is fast approaching 205 metres at the old railway bridge in central Delhi.
The Yamuna, which enters Haryana from Uttrakhand at Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district, had swelled since early Saturday after over eight lakh cusecs of water was released yesterday morning through Hathnikund barrage.
Meanwhile, Delhiites woke up to a pleasant weather this morning with overcast skies. The Met office has forecast more rainfall ins some areas in next 24 hours. The minimum temperature settled at 23.5 degree celsius, five nothches below average. Delhi has recorded 108.3 millimetres of rain since the onset of monsoon on Sunday.
