भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक ने ऋण लागत में कमी के जरिए आर्थिक विकास को बढ़ावा देने के लिए प्रमुख ब्याज दरों में शून्य दशमलव दो पांच प्रतिशत की कटौती की है और बैकिंग व्यवस्था में १८ हजार करोड़ रूपये की अतिरिक्त नकदी जारी की है। रिजर्व बैंक के गवर्नर डी सुब्बाराव ने मौद्रिक नीति की तीसरी तिमाही की समीक्षा में रेपो दर में शून्य दशमलव दो-पांच प्रतिशत की कटौती की घोषणा की। अब यह दर सात दशमलव सात-पांच प्रतिशत रह गई है। नकद आरक्षी अनुपात में भी एक चौथाई प्रतिशत की कमी करके इसे चार प्रतिशत कर दिया गया है।
रेपो दर में कटौती से व्यक्तिगत और कंपनियों को कम ब्याज पर ऋण उपलब्ध हो सकेंगें। नकद आरक्षी अनुपात वह राशि है जो बैंकों को रिजर्व बैंक के पास जमा करानी होती है। इसकी दर में कमी से बैंकों के पास अतिरिक्त धनराशि उपलब्ध होगी।
मुम्बई में मौद्रिक नीति की तिमाही समीक्षा जारी करते हुए डाक्टर सुब्बाराव ने कहा कि मुद्रास्फीति का जोखिम कम होने के मद्देनजर इस तिमाही समीक्षा में उचित ब्याज दर माहौल उपलब्ध कराने का प्रयास किया गया है।

नीति दस्तावेज हमारी मौद्रिक नीति के तीन महत्वपूर्ण आयाम निर्धारित करता है। पहला आयाम विकास को बढ़ावा देने के लिए उपयुक्त ब्याज+दर तय करना है। दूसरे इस दस्तावेज से मुद्रास्फीति में कमी आएगी। उसमें बढ़ोतरी की आशंकाए कम होंगी। इसका तीसरा आयाम नकदी की अपेक्षाएं पूरी करेगा।

रिजर्व बैंक ने चालू वित्त वर्ष के लिए आर्थिक वृद्धि के अनुमान को पांच दशमलव-आठ प्रतिशत से घटाकर पांच दशमलव-पांच प्रतिशत कर दिया है। मंहगाई दर के अनुमान को भी कम किया गया है। पहले रिजर्व बैंक ने मार्च के अंत तक मुद्रास्फीति साढे सात प्रतिशत रहने का अनुमान लगाया था जिसे घटाकर छह दशमलव आठ प्रतिशत कर दिया है।
रिजर्व बैंक ने मुद्रास्फीति के दबाव के मद्देनजर पिछले नौ महीनों से रेपो दर में कटौती नहीं की थी जबकि बैकिंग व्यवस्था में और नकदी डालने के लिए नकद आरक्षी अनुपात में एक दशमलव सात-पांच प्रतिशत की कटौती की गई थी।
रिजर्व बैंक ने चालू खाते के बढ़ते घाटे पर चिंता व्यक्त करते हुए कहा है कि तीसरी तिमाही में यह दूसरी तिमाही से ज्यादा रहने की संभावना है। दूसरी तिमाही में चालू खाता घाटा सकल घरेलू उत्पाद के पांच दशमलव चार प्रतिशत के बराबर था।
श्री सुब्बाराव ने सरकार के हाल के सुधारात्मक  उपायों की सराहना की। इनमें मल्टी ब्रांड खुदरा क्षेत्र में प्रत्यक्ष विदेशी निवेश की छूट के अलावा सामान्य कर वंचना रोधी नियम - गार को लागू करने की तारीख आगे बढ़ाने और डीजल को आंशिक रूप से मूल्य नियंत्रण से मुक्त करने जैसे उपाय शामिल हैं।
रिजर्व बैंक १९ मार्च को मध्य तिमाही समीक्षा और तीन मई को वार्षिक नीति की घोषणा करेगा।  योजना आयोग के उपाध्यक्ष मोंटेक सिंह आहलुवालिया ने कहा कि नकद आरक्षी अनुपात में कम करने से दीर्घ अवधि ब्याज दरें कम होंगी। वरिष्ठ आर्थिक पत्रकार सुरजीत गुप्ता ने रिजर्व बैंक के मौद्रिक उपायों को आर्थिक विकास की दिशा में अनुकूल कदम बताया है।

इससे एक फायदा जो होगा कि इसमें इन्ट्रेस्ट रेट घटेंगे जैसे कन्जयूमर डयूरेबल्स है या कन्जयूमर लोन्स है या होम लोन्स है, इसमें इसका इम्पैक्ट मिलेगा और इन्वेस्टमेंट के लिए एक काफी जोर मिलेगा। हालांकि उन्होंने कुछ शंकाए भी जताई है जैसे इन्फल्ेशन के उपर । इन्फल्ेशन के लिए अब सरकार को सप्लाई साइट टैंड करना पड़ेगा। सप्लाई बढ़ाने पड़ेगे। और जो बाधाएं है उसको दूर करना पड़ेगा। तो हमे लगता है कि आवरऑल ये बहुत ही पॉजिटिव पालिसी है।

प्रधानमत्री की आर्थिक सलाहकार परिषद के अध्यक्ष सी रंगराजन ने आज नई दिल्ली में कहा कि ब्याज दरों में कटौती के रिजर्व बैंक के निर्णय से मुद्रास्फीति को कम करने में मदद मिलेगी। श्री रंगराजन ने कहा कि रिजर्व बैंक के संतुलित दृष्टिकोण से विकास दर में तेजी सुनिश्चित की जा सकेगी।

आर्थिक सुधारों के लिए भारत की प्रतिबद्धता का आश्वासन देते हुए वित्तमंत्री पी० चिदम्बरम ने कहा है कि सरकार राजकोषीय और चालू खातों के घाटे में कटौती करेगी ताकि अर्थव्यवस्था फिर से आठ प्रतिशत की विकास दर पर लौट सके। फ्रेन्कफर्ट में प्रमुख यूरोपीय कम्पनियों, बैंकों और अन्य वित्तीय संस्थानों के लगभग दो सौ प्रतिनिधियों को सम्बोधित करते हुए वित्त मंत्री ने कहा कि देश की अर्थव्यवस्था सही रास्ते पर है और २००४ से २००८ के दौरान हासिल की गई विकास दर को पुनः हासिल करने का प्रयास जारी है। श्री चिदम्बरम ने कहा कि राजकोषीय और चालू घाटा अर्थव्यवस्था के सामने एक बड़ी चुनौती है।
राजकोषीय घाटे को कम करने के लिए सरकार के उपायों का जिक्र करते हुए वित्त मंत्री ने कहा कि किसी भी हालत में वे चालू वित्त वर्ष में सकल घरेलू उत्पाद को पांच दशमलव तीन प्रतिशत से नीचे नहीं होने देंगे। श्री चिदम्बरम ने जर्मनी की वित्तीय राजधानी कहे जाने वाले इस शहर में भारत में निवेश के लिए यूरोपीय कम्पनियों को आकर्षित करने के लिए विभिन्न कम्पनियों के साथ बातचीत की। इससे पहले उन्होंने हांगकांग और सिंगापुर में भी ऐसी ही बैठकें की।

कर्नाटक में भारतीय जनता पार्टी के १३ विधायकों ने आज विधानसभा अध्यक्ष के० जी० बोपैया को अपने इस्तीफे सौंपे। बी० एस० येडियुरप्पा के समर्थक होने का दावा करने वाले इन विधायकों ने अपने त्यागपत्र २३ तारीख को भी अध्यक्ष को सौंपने का प्रयास किया था, लेकिन अध्यक्ष की अनुपस्थिति  के कारण उन्हें आज तक इंतजार करना पड़ा। इन विधायकों ने राज्यपाल से अध्यक्ष की अनुपस्थिति के बारे में शिकायत भी की। कर्नाटक जनता पार्टी के महासचिव लक्ष्मी नारायण ने बताया कि एक अन्य भाजपा विधायक टी० सुरेश भी आज दोपहर तक अध्यक्ष को अपना इस्तीफा सौंपेंगे। इन्हें मिलाकर इस्तीफा देने वाले भाजपा विधायकों की संख्या १४ हो जायेगी। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि अगर ये इस्तीफे स्वीकार कर लिये गये तो विधानसभा में सदस्य संख्या २२३ से घटकर २०९ रह जायेगी।

विधायकों से इस्तीफा स्वीकार करने की प्रक्रिया जारी है। स्पीकर के कमरे के बाहर हर एक क्षण ये समाचार वालो को रहा है अभी तक कुल कितने विधायकों का इस्तीफा स्वीकार हुआ। ये कहा जा रहा है कि स्पीकर हर एक विधायक को एक-एक कर बुलाकर इस्तीफा स्वीकार कर रहे हैं। एक अन्य समाचार ये प्राप्त हुआ है कि लेजिस्लेटिव काउन्सिल के दो बीजेपी सदस्यों ने आज एक पैटिशिन लैजिसलेटिव काउंसिल के सैकेटरी को सौंपा है। जिसमें उन्होंने यह आरोप लगाया है कि पांच सदस्यों ने पार्टी विरोधी काम किया और उनके खिलाफ कार्यवाही करनी चाहिए। सुधीन्द्र आकाशवाणी समाचार बंगलौर।

उच्चतम न्यायालय ने दिल्ली सामूहिक बलात्कार और हत्या मामले का मुकदमा राष्ट्रीय राजधानी से बाहर कराने की याचिका आज खारिज कर दी। प्रधान न्यायाधीश न्यायमूर्ति अल्तमश कबीर की अध्यक्षता वाली पीठ ने २३ वषीय पैरा मेडिकल छात्रा के साथ सामूहिक दुष्कर्म और हत्या के छह आरोपियों में से एक की तरफ से दायर इस याचिका को खारिज कर दिया। १६ दिसम्बर की रात को दक्षिण दिल्ली में एक चलती बस में छह लोगों ने इस छात्रा के साथ सामूहिक दुष्कर्म किया और निर्ममतापूर्वक मारपीट की। पीड़िता की २९ दिसम्बर को सिंगापुर के एक अस्पताल में मृत्यु हो गई थी।

राजस्थान उच्च न्यायालय ने गुर्जर, राइका-रबाड़ी, गाडिया लोहार और बंजारा समुदायों को चार प्रतिशत अतिरिक्त आरक्षण देने के राज्य सरकार के फैसले पर रोक लगा दी है। न्यायमूर्ति एन० के० जैन की अध्यक्षता वाली राजस्थान उच्च न्यायालय की खण्डपीठ ने इस आदेश पर रोक लगाई। इस मामले पर अन्तिम सुनवाई १९ फरवरी को होगी। इससे पहले २८ नवम्बर को राजस्थान सरकार ने गुर्जर तथा चार अन्य समुदायों को विशेष पिछड़ा वर्ग श्रेणी के तहत सरकारी नौकरियों में चार प्रतिशत आरक्षण देने की घोषणा की थी।

सूचना और प्रसारण मंत्री मनीष तिवारी ने कहा है कि भारतीय संविधान में सभी नागरिकों को समान व्यवहार और सम्मान की गारंटी दी गई है। उन्होंने कहा कि पाकिस्तान के गृहमंत्री रहमान मलिक के लिए ये बेहतर होगा कि वे अपने देश में अल्पसंख्यकों की स्थिति सुधारने की चिन्ता करें। श्री तिवारी पत्रकारों से बातचीत में पाकिस्तान के गृहमंत्री रहमान मलिक की एक टिप्पणी पर प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्त कर रहे थे। पत्रकारों ने उनसे फिल्म अभिनेता शाहरूख खान को सुरक्षा प्रदान करने के बारे में पाकिस्तान के गृहमंत्री की टिप्पणी के बारे में सवाल पूछा था। श्री तिवारी ने कहा कि लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था में अल्पसंख्यकों की सुरक्षा अधिक महत्वपूर्ण है। इस बीच, कांग्रेस पार्टी ने कहा है कि रहमान मलिक को भारत के मामलों में दखल नहीं देना चाहिए। पार्टी प्रवक्ता राशिद अल्वी ने कहा कि भारत अपने लोगों की देखभाल करना जानता है। भाजपा प्रवक्ता मुख्तार अब्बास नकवी ने कहा कि भारत एक धर्मनिरपेक्ष राष्ट्र है और पाकिस्तान को अपने यहां अल्पसंख्यकों की चिन्ता करनी चाहिए।

सरकार ने प्रसार भारती के संस्थागत ढांचे की समीक्षा के लिए विशेषज्ञ समिति का गठन किया है। जन सूचना ढांचे से संबद्ध प्रधानमंत्री के सलाहकार सैम पित्रोदा सात सदस्यों की इस समिति के अध्यक्ष होंगे। समिति, सरकार और प्रसार भारती के सम्बन्धों की समीक्षा करेगी और लोक प्रसारक की भूमिका जारी रहने और इसे तकनीकी तौर पर आधुनिक बनाने के मुद्दों पर विचार विमर्श करेगी।
समिति के अन्य सदस्यों में सूचना और प्रसारण मंत्रालय की पूर्व सचिव आशा स्वरूप, ई-गर्वनेन्स के मिशन डायरेक्टर बी० के० गैरोला, अतिरिक्त सचिव और प्रसार भारती बोर्ड के नामजद सदस्य जितेन्द्र शंकर माथुर शामिल हैं। प्रसार भारती के मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी जवाहर सरकार समिति के संयोजक होंगे।

बम्बई शेयर बाजार के संवेदी सूचकांक में आज शुरूआती कारोबार में करीब ३१ अंक की गिरावट आई और ये २० हजार ७२ पर आ गया। अब से कुछ देर पहले सेंसेक्स ६० अंक गिरकर २० हजार ३९ पर था। नेशनल स्टॉक एक्सचेंज का निफ्‌टी भी ११ अंकों की गिरावट के साथ ६ हजार ६३ पर है।

Naxalites abduct eight labourers in Bihar

In Bihar naxalites abducted eight persons engaged in a road bridge construction in a village in Jamui district late last night.

Police said that a group of naxalites suddenly swooped on Badaldiah village and abducted eight persons including six labourers and a village guard.

Dy. Suprintendent of Police Virender Sahu told our Jamui correspondent that naxalites set fire to their shanty huts after abduction. He said that combing operations have been launched to nab the culprits.

Agitations continue in AP on Telangana issue

In Andhra Pradesh, agitations continued in favour of both demands for statehood for Telangana and for maintaing the State's Unity today.

Tension prevailed in Hyderabad after several agitators including MLAs were taken into custody in separate incidents while approaching the Samara Diksha Dharna site for which police did not give permission.

Demanding their release and permission to hold Samara Dikhsa, the Telangana Joint Action Committee and the Telangana Rastra Samithi leaders are holding protest demonstrations.

Osmania University Students have also been taken into custody when they tried to take out a protest rally to Raj Bhavan. The Telangana JAC has called for the 36-hour long Samara Dikhsa Dharna for which the TRS has also extended solidarity.

On the other hand, demonstrations continued in Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra regions in favour of maintaing the State's Unity . The Joint Action Committee members held protest demonstrations seeking Ministers to resign in favour of united state.

AP Govt. to reclaim Maheswaram special economic zone land

Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to reclaim land allotted to develop a Special Economic Zone in Maheswaram near Hyderabad.

The private limited company (Brahmani Infrautech Pvt Limited) could not initiate the work for construction of SEZ within the time limit.

More from AIR Hyderabad Correspondent reports that under the new land allotment policy, the State Government has begun working on reclaiming the lands allotted in bulk to private companies that have not utilised the land for intended purpose.

In this case, the Government has allotted 250 acres of land to a private company (Brahmani Infrautech Limited) for development of Special Economic Zone for Information Technology enterprises at the Ravirala village of Maheswaram Mandal near Hyderabad.

The land was allotted at cheaper rate based on a Memorandum of Understanding the company entered with the state Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation in 2006.

Accordingly, the company had to begin work within 12 months of allotment, develop and construct a minimum of 4.5 million square feet of office space over a five -year period and also employ 45 thousand people.

It also agreed to provide employment to 20 thousand people within three years of commencement of the project . The Government has now begun the process to reclaim the land so that it can be put to some other use.

NHRC to begin three day open hearing session in Nagpur from tomorrow

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will hold a three day open hearing session in Nagpur from tomorrow. An official press release says that over 570 cases related to alleged atrocities against members of Scheduled Castes in Maharashtra is likely to be heard in the session.

The Commission had invited complaints for the open hearing, which elicited about 1,400 applications. Of these, 571 cases were short-listed for calling reports from the authorities.

On 31st of this month, the Commission will hold a meeting with the representatives of NGOs in Mumbai, followed by a meeting of senior officers, including Maharashtra Chief Secretary and DGP.

NHRC has so far held open hearings on complaints of atrocities against scheduled castes in Odisha, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.

Gujarat: Mild tremor felt in Kutch, no loss reported

In Gujarat, a mild tremor measuring 3.2 on Richter Scale shook Kutch today.This rekindled memories of the devastating earthquake which had hit the same day in 2001.

Officials of the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said, the tremor was recorded late evening with its epicentre 11 km North-West from Bhachau taluka of Kutch.

However, no loss of life or damage to property was reported.The ISR officials said, mild tremors were felt near Bhachau in the recent past, but the intensity increased suddenly this evening.

A devastating earthquake of 7.7 magnitude on Richter Scale had rocked Kutch on January 26, 2001, in which thousands of people were killed and more than 4 lakh houses destroyed.

People in Kutch and other parts of the state, including Ahmedabad, today paid homage to the victims of the 2001 earthquake.

Bodo students appeale govt to resolve Bodoland issue

The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has appealed the government to resolve the Bodoland issue on the basis of legitimacy, geographical convenience and administrative convenience comprising the 32 tribal belts and blocks in the northern part of the Brahmaputra river.

The ABSU has organised a 12-hours hunger strike across the state in support of its demand.

Participating in the strike at Raazmela ground in Kokrajhar, ABSU president Promod Boro appealed to the government to organize a political dialogue immediately including all the Bodoland demand movement groups to resolve the Bodoland issue.

Kumbh: Large number of pilgrims taking holy dip today

A large number of pilgrims are taking holy dip at the Sangam, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers in Allahabad on the occasion of Paush Purnima today.

About 55 lakh people are expected to arrive at the Sangam on this occasion of bathing, which is an important part of the ongoing Kumbh Mela. The month-long Kalpwas, which begins on Paush Purnima and ends at Maghi Purnima, also begins today.

Uttar Pradesh government has made elobarate arrangements for the second main bathing of the Kumbh Mela. The entry of vehicles into Mela area has been restricted which will continue till this evening.

Entry of heavy vehicles into Allahabad city has also been restricted and they are moving on diverted routes.

Security has also been beefed up with the deployment of security persons from state police as well as central Para military forces.

160 commandos of the Anti-Terrorist Squad of the state police, CRPF and ITBP along with 30 companies of PAC and central Para military forces have been deployed in the Mela area.



Sharad Pawar shares solar auto rickshaw ride with Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister Sharad Pawar today shared a solar autorickshaw ride with former BJP president Nitin Gadkari at 'Agro Vision 2013', an agriculture exhibition organised in Nagpur.

Pawar, who arrived in Nagpur this evening from Pune by a special flight, spent about 40 minutes at the exhibition promoted by Gadkari, who resigned from his post earlier this week refusing to seek a second term in office amid charges of irregularities in Purti Group.Both the leaders visited the expo and interacted with the participants.

Later, Pawar told reporters that the Agriculture Ministry is exploring the possibility of organising a national-level agriculture exhibition in Delhi around Diwali, which will help create awareness about several issues in agriculture.

He said, a meeting will be held in New Delhi in the next fortnight to finalise the plan.Pawar said, the country's first Union Agriculture Minister Panjabrao Deshmukh, who hailed from Akola in Vidarbha region, had organised a similar exhibition.


North India continues to shiver under severe cold conditions

The extended spell of cold wave continued to affect normal life in parts of North India. Kashmir Valley continued to bear the brunt of cold wave as mercury plunged by several notches. Srinagar witnessed the coldest night of this winter with a low of minus 5.8 degree Celsius early yesterday.

Cold conditions prevailed in Punjab and Haryana as mercury remained a few notches below normal in both the states. Amritsar was the coldest place in the region as it recorded a minimum at 3.2 deg C, two notches below normal. Chandigarh experienced cold at 5.5 deg C, one degree below normal. In Haryana, Narnaul shivered at 3.5 deg C, three notches below normal.

In national capital, the minimum temperature settled two notches below normal at 6.4 degree Celsius, while the maximum was recorded at 21.4 deg C.

Several parts of Uttar Pradesh continued to reel under cold wave conditions with temperature remaining seven to 11 deg C below normal at several places. State capital Lucknow recorded 1.4 deg C and remained the coldest place in the state.



Police seek video of Ashis Nandy's remarks

Police in Jaipur have sought video of author Ashis Nandy's alleged controversial comments about people from OBC, SC and ST communities made at the Jaipur Literary Festival.

Additional Commissioner of Police Girraj Meena told agencies that police has sought the video footage of yesterday’s session in which Nandi made the remarks and also his clarification to be put on record.

Mr. Meena said that they have been informed by the organisers that Nandy left Jaipur today but proper action will be taken once the initial probe is over. According to reports Ashis Nandy skipping rest of the events has left the city amid protests demanding his arrest.

CJI stresses the need to focus on childcare

The Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir today stressed the need to focus on childcare and rehabilitation in the Juvenile justice system.

He was speaking at a workshop in Kochi after inaugurating the Additional District and Sessions court for trial of cases relating to sexual violence of women and children.

Justice Kabir said people need to be sensitised to do something for children who are marginalised. The Chief Justice also said to bring them into mainstream in society, there there is need to create among them a mindset that they are part of society and have a responsible role as well.

Salman Khurshid to visit Germany and Belgium

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid will undertake an official visit to Germany and Belgium from tomorrow.

During his two day visit to Germany the External Affairs Minister will hold bilateral discussions with German Foreign Minister, Dr. Guido Westerwelle and would call on the Chancellor of Germany Mrs. Angela Merkel.

The Summit level Indo-German consultations are to be held later this year with the Prime Minister scheduled to visit Germany. India and Germany are strategic partners since the year 2000.

Mr Khurshid will pay a two day visit to Belgium from 30th of this month to hold bilateral discussions with the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mr. Didier Reynders and with European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the Vice President of the European Commission, Baroness Catherine Ashton.
AIR correspondent reports that India-EU Summit meeting will be held in Brussels later this year.

NAC concerned over caste discrimination against children in schools

National Advisory Council chaired by Sonia Gandhi has expressed concern over discrimination against children in schools on the basis of caste, religion
and community.

The NSC suggested measures to the government to tackle the issue.
Pointing out the problems in school premises and classes, NAC said, it has received complaints of discrimination in providing seats, water and even in the mid-day meal, while reviewing the implementation of the Right to Education Act.

The Council has suggested to the HRD ministry to have a discussion with state governments on the issue and requested for suggestions from experts and teachers in this regard by 28th January .

Will not ask CM to seek a vote of confidence in state assembly: K'taka Governor

Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj has not asked Chief Minister Jagdish Shetter to seek a vote of confidence in state assembly. Talking to media persons in Bangalore yesterday, the Governor said, the resignation of 13 MLAs does not reduce the government to minority. Mr Bhardwaj said, if more BJP MLAs resign, he will step in and ask the Chief Minister to face floor test.

Chief Minister has expressed confidence that his government is safe and will present the budget on February 8th. The Chief Minister will visit New Delhi this evening and meet BJP National President Rajnath Singh.

On the other hand, the sources in Yeddyurappa led-Karnataka Janata Party say that many more Ministers and BJP MLAs will resign tomorrow. AIR correspondent reports that the Speaker, who is abroad since Wednesday, is likely to return tomorrow. 13 of the BJP MLAs wishing to resign and join Karnataka Janata Party have complained to the Governor that the Speaker is not available to receive their resignation letters.

Congress core group discusses Telangana issue

Jan 27 Congress Core Group met in New Delhi last evening to discuss Telangana issue. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde among others. Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, was specially invited to the meeting. A couple of days ago, Mr. Azad had hinted that a decision on Telangana issue could be delayed. A section of Congress leaders feel that Mr. Shinde can speak on the issue before his Dhaka visit on Monday.

REPUBLLIC DAY
Along with the rest of the country, the North Eastern States yesterday celebrated
the 64
th
 Republic Day with enthusiasm and solemnity. In Meghalaya, Governor,
R.S. Mooshahary unfurled the national flag at J.N.  Sports Complex in Shillong.
Army, police, high officials and general public attended the function despite the
call of the HNLC to boycott the Republic Day celebration. In Assam, the main
Republic Day function was held at Khanapara Veterinary College Play ground in
Guwahati where Governor J B Patnaik hoisted the tricolour. Defying the boycott
call of several insurgent groups, people from all walks of life participated in the
celebration. In Tripura, the main function was held at the Assam Rifles Ground in
Agartala where the Chief Minister of Tripura Manik Sarkar unfurled the National
Flag and took saluté of the parade. Meanwhile, in Manipur, the Republic Day was
celebrated amidst tight security at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal. In Arunachal
Pradesh, Governor JJ Singh unfurled the tri-colour  during a colourful Republic
Day celebration held at Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar. In Mizoram, Governor
Vakkom B Purushothaman unfurled the Tricolour at the main celebration at Assam
Rifles Ground in Aizawl. Sikkim governor Balmiki Prasad took the salute at the
Republic Day celebrations in the state which was held at Palzor stadium in
Gangtok.  ARTISTS
Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar yesterday gave away  the Governor's Award
2012 for distinction in the field of Art, Music and Literature was held at the Durbar
Hall of the Raj Bhavan. Congratulating all the awardees, Mr. Kumar said Nagas
are really talented and many talented Nagas have already set their foot into the
international level, which is something wonderful.  The Governor mentioned that
the talents that Nagas have, are enough proof of confidence and the elements of
achievement are really remarkable and congratulated Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio
for being the brain behind the awards. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his
short speech congratulated all the awardees and said that Nagas are not lagging
behind in talents but they have to work hard to achieve different goals in life.
Altogether, five personalities from field of Art, Music and Literature were awarded
on the occasion.

Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen. J J Singh yesterday inaugurated the Adventure
Tourism Camp – a major infrastructure project of the Tourism Department at Jote,
about 35 Kms from Itanagar, which is set to take forward the hilly state on top of
the world tourism map. A brainchild of the governor, the eco-tourism resort was
constructed within a “record” time of just 17 and half months and has facilities
such as three cottages (which are named after rivers Papum, Poma and Jote),
cafeteria, picnic-hut and parking place.  A children’s park is also in the offing.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Governor exuded confidence that the
project would have a positive impact on the socio-economic development of the
area in particular and the state as a whole. General Singh also stressed on
promotion of the ‘Home Stay’ concept in Poma-Jote areas adjoining the project
and suggested construction of a model tribal house in the site.

EXPLOSIVES
In Assam, plastic explosives were seized from three youths who were targeting a
power station in Dhemaji district on Republic Day. According to police sources the
three youths, sped away on their motorcycles, when  signaled to stop during a
routine check near the Panbari border outpost under Gerukamukh police station.
The youths were caught and arrested following a chase and three packets of plastic
explosives, five packets of fuse wire, six fuses and daggers were found in their
possession.  Police sources said that the youths identified as Pranendra Wari,
Nakesh Narzari and Hemkanta Narzari were targeting the National Hydroelectric
Power Corporation at the Gerukamukh dam site. The youths have not divulge the
name of the insurgent group to which they belonged.

The absconding kingpin of a job-scam in Pasighat-based North East Institute of
Folk Medicines allegedly involving crores of rupees surrendered before East Siangdistrict police. A local magistrate gave Osing Dai, the mastermind who works as a
clerk in the NEIFM seven-day police remand. East Siang Superintendent of Police
Pushpendra Kumar said that investigation is on to ascertain the modus operandi
and the amount involved. Stating that gullible job  seekers paid hefty amounts
without cross checking facts, the SP made a fervent appeal to aggrieved job
seekers to lodge complaints with the police with evidence of payment to facilitate
repayment in case of recovery. According to sources, Osing had managed to
convince job seekers through agents that the institute set up by union ministry of
health and family welfare under AYUSH would recruit for 174 posts, including A,
B and C grades.

A 10-member delegation of the Naga Mothers' Association (NMA), led by its
president Abi-e Meru, would leave for Delhi today to receive Times of India social
impact 'lifetime contribution' award. According to NMA President Ms Meru, ten
members including women tribal leaders of the association would attend the award
ceremony. She also disclosed that the Supreme Court final hearing on Women
Reservation has been deferred to the first week of February

In Jammu and Kashmir, the cross-LoC trade and travel to Pakistan will resume tomorrow from Chakan-Da-Bagh in Poonch district. The custodian of the Cross LoC Trade, Mr. Krishen Lal said, the tension on the LoC have eased and the routine trade and travel between the two countries would resume from tomorrow.

"The bus service and cross border trade, which was suspended on January 8th, due to an incident on LoC, will resume from tomorrow, which includes the passenger bus service Rah-e-Milan. We got the confirmation from the higher authorities yesterday. Day before yesterday, we got the message from Pakistan that they are willing to resume it."

Earlier, Secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan on water sharing, scheduled tobegin in Islamabad tomorrow, were put off. A Pakistan Foreign Ministry official told PTI in Islamabad that new dates for the talks are yet to be decided.

In Assam, security has been intensified in Goalpara district following two low intensity blasts, last night. No casualty has been reported. Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Preetam Saikia said that six additional companies of Central para-military forces are being deployed in the district to maintain law and order.

"Three companies of the Central para-military force have already been deployed while the rest are likely to arrive by evening. Senior police officials have visited the spot and recovered a bomb like substance at Jaleshwar. No casualty has been reported. The Deputy Commissioner has not ruled out involvement of any insurgent groups behind the blast. One person was beaten to death by angry mob after the incident for allegedly throwing a bomb. District administration has maintaining a close watch and urged all maintain peace. Investigations are on. Manas Pratim Sharma, AIR News, Guwahati."

The All Bodo Students Union, ABSU has appealed to the government to resolve the Bodoland issue on the basis of legitimacy, geographical and administrative convenience, comprising the 32 tribal belts and blocks in the northern part of the Brahmaputra river. The ABSU has organised a 12-hour hunger strike across the state in support of its demand. Participating in the strike at Raazmela ground in Kokrajhar, ABSU President Promod Boro appealed to the government to organize a political dialogue immediately including all the Bodoland demand movement groups, to resolve the Bodoland issue.

In Andhra Pradesh, agitations continued in favour of both demands for statehood for Telangana and for maintaining the State's Unity today. Tension prevailed in Hyderabad after several agitators, including MLAs, were taken into custody in separate incidents while approaching the Samara Diksha Dharna site, for which police did not give permission. Demanding their release and permission to hold Samara Dikhsa, the Telangana Joint Action Committee and the Telangana Rastra Samithi leaders are holding protest demonstrations.

Osmania University Students were also taken into custody when they tried to take out a protest rally to Raj Bhavan. The Telangana JAC has called for the 36-hour long Samara Dikhsa Dharna for which the TRS has also extended solidarity. On the other hand, demonstrations continued in Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra regions in favour of maintaining the State's Unity. The Joint Action Committee members held protest demonstrations seeking Ministers to resign in favour of a united state.

In Bihar, Naxalites abducted eight persons engaged in a road bridge construction in a village in Jamui district, late last night. Police said that a group of Naxalites suddenly swooped on Badaldiah village and abducted eight persons, including six labourers and a village guard. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Virender Sahu told our Jamui correspondent that Naxalites also set fire to their shanty huts. He said that combing operations have been launched to nab the culprits.

Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office, V Narayanasamy has urged playback singer S. Janaki to accept the Padmabhushan award announced by the central government. Talking to reporters in Tirunelveli, he said that the central government is not showing any discrimination towards artists while announcing awards.

In Egypt, Army has been deployed in Port Said and has taken control of the Suez canal, as the death toll in the clashes in Port Said has gone up to 36, while more than 300 have been injured. The clashes were sparked off by announcement of death sentence to 21 local people to death over football riots in February last year, which left 74 people dead. The supporters of the accused tried to storm the city prison which led to gunfire. Two police officers outside the prison were among the killed in the violence.

Meanwhile, the National Defence Council, the country's apex security agency, chaired by President Mohammed Mursi and top army generals has appealed for calm. It also urged the opposition to come for a national dialogue, as violent clashes spilled over to the suburbs of Cairo today. The Council held an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation.

In Philippines, nine persons were killed, when gunmen ambushed a truck carrying policemen and village guards in a mountainous central province today. A police official said that a policeman and eight others, mostly village guards, were killed by unidentified men before dawn in La Castellana town in Negros Occidental province. Two other policemen were wounded.

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC will hold a three-day open hearing session in Nagpur from tomorrow. An official press release says that over 570 cases related to alleged atrocities against members of Scheduled Castes in Maharashtra, are likely to be heard in the session. The Commission had invited complaints for the open hearing, which elicited about 1,400 applications. Of these, 571 cases were short-listed for calling reports from the authorities. On the 31st of this month, the Commission will hold a meeting with the representatives of NGOs in Mumbai, followed by a meeting of senior officers, including Maharashtra Chief Secretary and DGP.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde is reaching Dhaka tomorrow on a two-day visit to Bangladesh at the invitation of the Bangladesh Home Minister MK Alamgir. Soon after his arrival, Mr. Shinde is scheduled to hold discussions with the Bangladeshi counterpart, after which the two sides are expected to sign an extradition treaty and a revised travel agreement. Mr. Shinde is also scheduled to call on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and hold discussions with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni on the second day of his visit.

"The extradition treaty which is expected to be signed during the visit of Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde is a step towards strengthening the existing legal framework for co-operation in security matters between India and Bangladesh. The extradition treaty is expected to help both countries in the process of nabbing militants, terrorists and most wanted criminals who try to escape the law by crossing borders. In addition to this, both sides are expected to sign a revised travel agreement during the Union Home Minister's visit which is expected to liberalise the visa rules for businesspersons, senior citizens and medical treatment cases. The numbers of tigers in Maharashtra has gone up from 169 to 200, since 2010. However, 14 tigers have died in 2012 and 3 tigers have died in just less than one month of this year. However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Pritiviraj Chavan said that the state government is taking strong steps to curb poaching of tigers and other wild animals. This issue figured prominently in the meeting of state board for wildlife held recently in Pune under the chairmanship of Chief Minister.

"Poaching of wild animals is a major concern and it has been found that tigers are being poached by electrocution. To prevent poaching of tigers by electrocution, two proposals came up before the state wildlife board. The first proposal was to consider whether high tension lines can be laid underground, and the second proposal was whether any rubber coating can be used for the lines passing through the sanctuaries. No decision has been taken yet, but the Chief Minister announced setting up of a co-ordination group of electricity and the forest department to work out a proposal whether any joint patrolling team can be deployed along the overhead power lines. As a step to extend the Direct Cash Transfer Scheme, DCTS to all State welfare programmes, the Puducherry Government has set up a Unique Identification Implementation Cell in the Union Territory. Our correspondent reports that Puducherry is among the districts chosen for the first phase of Central government's DCTS.

"The Unique Identification Implementation Cell in the Union Territory will function under the Department of Planning and Research and will co-ordinate with the nodal officers of various departments and agencies, implementing welfare programmes, in carrying out the Aadhar Enabled Payment Services. In Uttar Pradesh, bathing is going on peacefully under tight security arrangements at Allahabad on the occasion of Paush Purnima, the second bathing festival of Maha Kumbh Mela. The Divisional Commissioner Allahabad and nodal officer of the Mela Mr. Devesh Chaturvedi told our correspondent that devotees have thronged the Sangam and other bathing Ghats across all sectors of the Mela. He said, in addition to the Sangam, 18 bathing Ghats have been developed on the banks of the river Ganga for pilgrims.

"Hundreds of thousands of devotees have come from across the country and even abroad to take holy dip on this occasion. About 30 companies of PAC and central Para military forces have been deployed in the Mela area. About 50 Close Circuit TV Cameras have also been set up for keeping eyes on the movements of anti-social elements and miscreants. Adequate security measures have also been taken at bathing Ghats and barricading is erected at deep water at all Ghats. Entry of heavy vehicles into the Allahabad town is restricted and no vehicle is allowed into Mela area. असम के ग्वालपाड़ा जिले में कल रात दो विस्फोटों के बाद सुरक्षा बढ़ा दी गई है। किसी के हताहत होने की खबर नहीं है। ग्वालपाड़ा के उपायुक्त प्रीतम सैकिया ने बताया  
कि जिले में कानून और व्यवस्था बनाये रखने के लिए केन्द्रीय अर्द्धसैनिक बलों की छह अतिरिक्त कम्पनियां तैनात की जा रही हैं। हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि विस्फोट की जांच-पड़ताल जारी है।

ग्वालपाड़ा जिले में सुरक्षा बलों की तीन कंपनी तैनात किया गया है जबकि बाकी कंपनी शाम तक पहुंचने की उम्मीद है। वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारी विस्फोट स्थल पहुंच कर स्थिति का जायजा ले रहे हैं। गोरेश्वर में और एक बम भी बरामद की गई है। जिला उपायुक्त ने घटना के पीछे किसी उग्रवादी गुटों के हाथ होने की बात खारिज नहीं की  है। विस्फोट में किसी तरह के नुकसान की खबर नहीं है। कल रात ही गुस्साए लोगों के प्रहार से बम फेंकने के कथित आरोप में एक बदमाश की मौत हो गई। जिला प्रशासन सिटी पर कड़ी नजर रखने के साथ ही लोगों से शांति और सद्भाव बनाए रखने का भी आग्रह किया है। मानस प्रतिम शर्मा आकाशवाणी सामचार, गुवाहाटी

बिहार में नक्सलियों ने जमुई जिले के एक गांव में कल देर रात आठ लोगों का अपहरण कर लिया। पुलिस के अनुसार नक्सलियों के एक गुट ने बादलदिहा गांव में अचानक धावा बोलकर सड़क और पुल निर्माण के काम में लगे आठ लोगों को अगवा कर लिया। इनमें छह श्रमिक और एक गार्ड थे। पुलिस उप-अधीक्षक वीरेन्द्र साहू ने हमारे संवाददाता को बताया कि नक्सलियों ने इन लोगों का अपहरण करने के बाद उनकी झुग्गियों में आग लगा दी। उन्होंने बताया कि अपराधियों की धरपकड़ के लिए अभियान शुरू कर दिया गया है।

गृह मंत्री सुशील कुमार शिंदे कल दो दिन की बंगलादेश यात्रा पर ढाका जायेंगे। पीटीआई ने गृह मंत्रालय के एक अधिकारी के हवाले से खबर दी है कि इस यात्रा के दौरानदोनों देशों के बीच नए वीजा समझौते और प्रत्यर्पण संधि पर हस्ताक्षर होने की संभावना है। नई वीजा व्यवस्था के तहत दोनों देशों के व्यापारियों, छात्रों, रोगियों, ६५ वर्ष से अधिक उम्र के लोगों तथा १२ वर्ष से कम उम्र के बच्चों पर से वीजा प्रतिबंध समाप्त हो जाएंगे। नई प्रत्यर्पण संधि के बाद, आपराधिक और उग्रवादी घटनाओं में शामिल लोगों को उनके देश वापस भेजा जा सकेगा।

भारतीय राजस्व सेवा संघ ने भाजपा के पूर्व अध्यक्ष नितिन गडकरी द्वारा आयकर अधिकारियों के खिलाफ की गई कथित टिप्पणियों पर गहरा रोष व्यक्त किया है। कल पारित  एक प्रस्ताव में संघ ने मांग की है कि श्री गडकरी को इसके लिए बिना शर्त माफी मांगनी चाहिए। श्री गडकरी ने कर चोरी के संदिग्ध मामले की जांच कर रहे अधिकारियों के खिलाफ कथित रूप से धमकी भरी टिप्पणी की थी।

आंध्र प्रदेश में तेलंगाना को राज्य का दर्जा देने और राज्य की अखंडता बनाए रखने-दोनों मांगों को लेकर अलग-अलग प्रदर्शन जारी हैं। आज हैदराबाद में समर दीक्षा धरना-स्थल की ओर बढ़ रहे प्रदर्शनकारियों को हिरासत में लेने के बाद तनाव बढ़ गया। हिरासत में लिए गए लोगों में विधायक भी शामिल हैं। पुलिस ने इस स्थल पर धरने  की इज+ाजत नहीं दी थी। तेलंगाना संयुक्त कार्रवाई समिति और तेलंगाना राष्ट्र समिति के नेता गिरफ्‌तार लोगों की रिहाई और समर दीक्षा आयोजित करने की मांगों को लेकर विरोध-प्रदर्शन कर रहे हैं।

मिस्र में पोर्ट सैद में झड़पों में मृतकों की बढ़ती संख्या के मद्देनज+र, सेना तैनात कर दी गई है और सेना ने स्वेज नहर का नियंत्रण भी अपने हाथ में ले लिया है। पोर्ट सैद में मरने वालों की संख्या ३६ हो गई है और ३०० से ज्यादा घायल हुए हैं। पिछले वर्ष फरवरी में फुटबाल दंगों में हुई मौतों के सिलसिले में २१ स्थानीय लोगों को मौत की सजा सुनाए जाने के बाद ये झड़पें शुरू हुईं। इन दंगों में ७४ लोग मारे गए थे। आरोपियों के समर्थकों ने नगर की जेल में तोड़फोड़ की कोशिश की जिसके जवाब में गोलीबारी शुरू हुई। इस हिंसा में जेल के बाहर मारे गए लोगों में २ पुलिसकर्मी भी शामिल हैं।

पाकिस्तान में, नए प्रांतों से संबंधित संसदीय आयोग ने पंजाब से बहावलपुर दक्षिणी पंजाब नामक नया प्रांत बनाने पर सहमति कायम कर ली है। आयोग ने अपनी रिपोर्ट के मसौदे को मंजूरी दे दी हैं जिसे नेशनल असेम्बली में मंगलवार को पेश किए जाने की संभावना है। आयोग के अध्यक्ष फरकतुल्ला ने मीडिया को बताया कि आयोग की एक और बैठक कल होगी।इस आयोग को पाकिस्तान के पंजाब प्रांत से दो नए प्रांत बनाने का काम सौंपा गया था।

जापान ने खुफिया सूचनाएं जुटाने वाला एक उपग्रह प्रक्षेपित किया है। यह उपग्रह एच-टू-ए रॉकेट से आज दक्षिणी जापान के तानेगाशिमा अंतरिक्ष केंद्र से छोड़ा गया। इस उपग्रह में लगी राडार प्रणाली से रात में और खराब मौसम में भी तस्वीरें ली जा सकेंगी। बताया जाता है कि यह उपग्रह धरती पर एक मीटर तक के आकार वाली चीजों की तस्वीर भी ले सकता है।

पौष पूर्णिमा के अवसर पर उत्तरप्रदेश के इलाहाबाद में कुम्भ मेले का दूसरा महा स्नान कड़े सुरक्षा प्रबन्धों के बीच शान्तिपूर्ण ढंग से चल रहा है। इलाहाबाद के मंडल आयुक्त और मेले के नोडल अधिकारी देवेश चतुर्वेदी ने हमारे संवाददाता को बताया कि सुबह १० बजे तक लगभग १५ लाख श्रद्धालु संगम में स्नान कर चुके थे। उन्होंने बताया कि  संगम के अलावा गंगा तट पर श्रद्धालुओं के लिए १८ स्नान घाट बनाये गये हैं। श्री चतुर्वेदी ने बताया कि घाटों पर पर्याप्त सुरक्षा प्रबन्ध किये गये हैं। हमारे संवाददाता ने  
बताया है महास्नान पूरे दिन जारी रहेगा और इसके लिए करीब ५५ लाख श्रद्धालुओं के पहुंचने की सम्भावना है।

जयपुर पुलिस ने लेखक आशीष नन्दी द्वारा जयपुर साहित्य महोत्सव में अनुसूचित जाति, अनुसूचित जनजाति और पिछड़ा वर्ग के लोगों के बारे में की गई कथित विवादित  टिप्पणी का वीडियो टेप मांगा है। अतिरिक्त पुलिस आयुक्त गिरराज मीणा ने एक समाचार एजेन्सी को बताया कि पुलिस ने कल के सत्र की वीडियो फुटेज देने को कहा है जिसमें लेखक ने कथित टिप्पणी की थी। पुलिस ने उनसे इस पर स्पष्टीकरण देने को भी कहा है। श्री मीणा ने कहा कि आयोजकों ने उन्हें सूचित किया है कि श्री नन्दी आज जयपुर से रवाना हो गये हैं और शुरूआती जांच पूरी होने पर उचित कार्रवाई की जायेगी। एजेन्सी के अनुसार श्री नन्दी की गिरफ्‌तारी की मांग और विरोध प्रदर्शनों के बीच वे शेष आयोजन को छोड़कर शहर से चले गये हैं।

Secretary level talks between India and Pakistan on water sharing, scheduled tobegin in Islamabad tomorrow, have been put off. A Pakistan Foreign Ministry officialtold PTI in Islamabad that new dates for the talks are yet to be decided. The official did not specify reasons for the postponement of the parleys. Pakistani mediareports say, the two-day talks were cancelled in the wake of tension between thetwo countries over ceasefire violations along the Line of Control. The two sides were scheduled to discuss the Tulbul

navigation project-Wullar Barrage issue during the talks.

This is the second high-level bilateral interaction that has been put off because of bad atmospherics between India and Pakistan over ceasefire violations along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Congress Core Group met in New Delhi last evening to discuss the Telangana issue. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde among others. Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, was specially invited to the meeting. A couple of days ago, Mr. Azad had hinted that a decision on the Telangana issue could be delayed. A section of Congress leaders feel that Mr. Shinde can speak on the issue before his Dhakavisit tomorrow.

Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj has not asked the Chief Minister Jagdish Shetter to seek a vote of confidence in the state assembly. Talking to media persons inBangalore yesterday, the Governor said, the resignation of 13 MLAs does not reduce the government to a minority. The Chief Minister has expressed confidence that his government is safe and will present the budget on February 8th.

In Assam, two separate bomb blasts created panic in Goalpara last night. State Home Secretary G D Tripathi said that unidentified miscreants triggered a blast at the campus of the Jaleshwar MLA’s residence at Jaleshwar in the district. Another bomb blast was reported at Gaurnagar area. No casualty has been reported .Our correspondent has filed this report.

Goalpara district administration is maintaining a close watch on the situation. The overall Situation in some areas are tense but under control. No organisations have claimed responsibility for the twin blasts. The extended spell of cold wave continued to affect normal life in parts of North India. Kashmir Valley continued to bear the brunt of the cold wave as the mercury plunged by several notches. Srinagar witnessed the coldest night of this winter with a low of minus 5.8 degree Celsius early yesterday.

Cold conditions prevailed in Punjab and Haryana as mercury remained a few notches below normal in both the states.

In national capital, the minimum temperature settled two notches below normal at 6.4 degree Celsius, while the maximum was recorded at 21.4 deg C.

In Egypt, the death toll in the clashes in Port Said has gone up to 31, while more than 300 people have been injured. The Army has been deployed in Port Said and has taken control of the Suez canal. A report from our correspondent.

On Saturday morning an Egyptian court announced death sentence for 21 persons on charges of killing of 74 people in the rioting and stampede in Port Said in February last year. As the verdict was passed by the court in Port Said, the supporters of the accused tried to storm the city prison. In the gunfire , two police officers were shot dead outside the prison while 30 people in all lost their lives. All 21 accused sentenced to death are fans of thePort Said club Al-Masry. More than 70 accused are standing trial over the tragedy at the Post Said stadium and the court will hear the cases of the other accused in early March. Atul Tiwary, AIR News.

A large number of pilgrims are taking a holy dip at the Sangam, the confluence ofGanga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers in Allahabad on the occasion of Paush Purnima today. About 55 lakh people are expected to arrive at the Sangam on this occasion of bathing, which is an important part of the ongoing Kumbh Mela. Our correspondent reports that the month-long Kalpwas, which begins on Paush Purnima and ends at Maghi Purnima, also begins today.

Bathing stated at most of the Ghats and at Sangam from early in the morning in a cold weather and it will continue whole day. The District Magistrate made a formal appeal to the pilgrims for taking baths at Sangam but it was started before the announcement. Adequate security measures have been taken at bathing Ghats and barricadings are erected at deep water at all Ghats. Entry of heavy vehicles into Allahabad city has also been restricted and they are moving on diverted routes.
